Limestone inscribed relief ca. 3rd century B.C. Cypriot Zeus, holding a thunderbolt in his right hand, sits on a throne at center. Facing him is Apollo, playing the kithara (lyre), and the smaller figure behind him is identified as Hermes by the caduceus, his winged herald's staff. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Magical Figure ca. 1802-1550 B.C. Late Middle Kingdom-Second Intermediate Period These tablets of unfired clay with attached crude faces were found as a group by the Museum's excavators at Lisht South in loose surface sand west of the mastaba of Senwosretankh, a high official and possibly the architect of the pyramid complex of Senwosret I (ca. 1961-1917 B. C.), east of which he erected his own very elaborate mastaba tomb (see acc. nos. 33.1.2 and other pieces). The mud figures and little coffin (acc. no. 33.1.66) that had contained some of them must have been buried, however, considerably later than the early twelfth dynasty tomb close to which they were found. In fact, during the thirteenth and following dynasties people deposited a number of objects in the by then sacred area around a legendary ruler's pyramid and its dependant monuments, believing conceivably that potent magical powers could thus be released. Incised furniture plaque with a kneeling bull ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian This trapezoidal plaque was found in a room that has been identified as part of the royal residency at Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was probably used to store tribute and booty collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. Ivories with incised decoration like this one have been attributed to an Assyrian style similar to the large reliefs lining the walls of the Northwest Palace. The kneeling bull depicted on this plaque, with its stylized musculature and elaborately incised anatomy, recalls the animals embroidered on the robes worn by the figures in the palace reliefs and can be compared with depictions of animals in glyptic art and glazed ceramics from the Neo-Assyrian period. Menat of Taharqo: the King Being Nursed by the Lion-Headed Goddess Bastet 690-664 B.C. Third Intermediate Period This menat, or necklace counterpose, is decorated with a relief scene showing King Taharqo as a child nursed by a the goddess Bastet, implying his divine status. The delicate faience material indicates the menat was not meant for use as part of a menat necklace shaken in temple ceremonies, but rather might have been a temple donation or possibly intended for the pharaoh's burial.. Stela of King Intef II Wahankh ca. 2108-2059 B.C. First Intermediate Period Horus Wahankh Intef II was the third king of Dynasty 11, a period when Egypt was not unified under one ruler. Intef II engaged in numerous battles with the rival rulers of Heracleopolis (the capital of the northern part of the country) and eventually secured control over southern Egypt, from Abydos to Aswan. This laid the foundation for the reunification of the country under King Mentuhotep II (07.230.2; 26.3.29)This stele was probably one of a number of small stela set up in the courtyard of his tomb at Thebes. The king presents a bowl of beer and a jug of milk to the god Re and the goddess Hathor. He is wearing a minutely pleated kilt, heavy broad collar and elaborately curled wig. The figure is well carved in very high raised relief. The text of the stele includes a request to Re for protection during the night and a hymn of praise to Hathor as well as a prayer for mortuary offerings.. Stela of King Intef II

Painted limestone funerary slab with a man controlling a rearing horse 2nd half of 3rd century B.C. Greek During the Ptolemaic period a distinctive type of subterranean tomb for multiple burials proliferated in the cemeteries around the city of Alexandria. Underground chambers cut into the living rock radiated from a central courtyard open to the sky. Most chambers contained a number of loculi, long narrow niches cut into the walls, which served as burial slots. Some loculi were sealed with painted limestone slabs in the form of small shrines. Here, a lively depiction of a man trying to bridle a horse, while a boy stands behind him, commemorates a man from Thessaly in Northern Greece, who must have been one of the many foreigners who congregated in the wealthy, cosmopolitan Ptolemaic capital.. Date: ca. 8th century B.C..In contrast to the grand, stylized reliefs that flanked the walls of the palace of Ashurnasirpal II at Nimrud are the delicate ornamental ivories that once adorned royal furniture. Ivory, prized throughout the ancient world, was used extensively at the time of the Assyrian Empire (ca. 883-612 B.C.). The material was valued by craftsmen because it could be carved in such detail. Although modern tastes appreciate the beauty of an ivory surface, these carvings were often covered with gold foil. Many of the ivories found at Nimrud were brought as booty or tribute from the vassal states to the west of Assyria, where elephants were native and ivory carving was a long-established craft. An image of the infant Horus on the front beneath a Bes-image is shown subduing dangerous animals. The Metternich Stela (acc. 50.85) is the largest and most elaborate example of the genre.Texts on such stelae often include a reference to transforming water poured over the stela into a curative libation. Cylinder seal and modern impression: bird, man, horned animal ca. 15th century B.C. Cypriot Although engraved stones had been used as early as the seventh millennium B.C. to stamp impressions in clay, the invention in the fourth millennium B.C. of carved cylinders that could be rolled over clay allowed the development of more complex seal designs. These cylinder seals, first used in Mesopotamia, served as a mark of ownership or identification. Seals were either impressed on lumps of clay that were used to close jars, doors, and baskets, or they were rolled onto clay tablets that recorded information about commercial or legal transactions. The seals were often made of precious stones. Protective properties may have been ascribed to both the material itself and the carved designs. Seals are important to the study of ancient Near Eastern art because many examples survive from every period and can, therefore, help to define chronological phases. Orthostat relief: winged human-headed lion ca. 10th9th century B.C. Hittite The powerful Neo-Assyrian Empire influenced the surrounding region culturally as well as politically. In the west a number of small but powerful Aramaean city-states acted as a barrier between Assyria and the Mediterranean coast. These have been called Neo-Hittite city-states because of their dynastic continuity and relation to the preceding Hittites of Anatolia. These rival states were gradually brought under the control of the Neo-Assyrian Empire by military conquest.Stone slabs carved in low relief had traditionally decorated the walls of the Neo-Hittite palaces and temples. This slab depicts a winged human-headed lion. It is one of many excavated at Tell Halaf, the ancient Aramaean site of Guzana, bearing images of fantastic creatures, hunting scenes, and ceremonial banquets. Date: 10th century.This luster ware bowl represents just one of the ceramic types from Iraq that was found in Nishapur. Its true metallic sheen--derived from a technique not known to Nishapuri potters--confirms that it was made in Iraq, and its single color dates it to the tenth century. Together with other examples, this bowl is evidence of the active trade between the two regions once Nishapur was incorporated into the Abbasid empire in the eighth century. It does not appear that Nishapur ceramics were very popular in the west, though; they only seem to have traveled in the immediate vicinity of Samarqand, Herat, and Merv, and perhaps to Kirman in southeastern Iran. Doorjamb of the Mayor of Memphis Menkheper ca. 1391-1353 B.C. New Kingdom This is the left doorjamb from a Theban tomb of the New Kingdom. It was found reused as a door sill in the north wall of the "palace" tomb of Sheshonq (TT 27), who served as the Chief Steward of the God's Wife of Amun Ankhnesneferibre during Dynasty 26. The doorjamb is inscribed with an offering prayer to Re-Harakhty-Atum, beneath which is a finely executed representation of Menkheper, the mayor of Memphis under the 18th Dynasty pharaoh Amenhotep III.
