The Dream of Queen Maya (the Buddha's Conception) ca. 2nd century Pakistan (ancient region of Gandhara) Female attendants and guards, one of whom holds a sword, surround Maya, who is sleeping on a bed that has turned legs and is covered with an elegant floral textile. Maya dreams of a six-tusked elephant that descends from heaven to enter her womb through her right side; originally a small elephant would have been depicted in the broken central disk. Full scale reconstruction of the gates from the palace of Shalmaneser III (585-824 BC) at Balawat. It is made of cedarwood and fitted with electrotype copies of the original bronze bands.

Date: 2nd century B.C..in high relief, woman with a cornucopiaFaience oinochoai depicting Ptolemaic queens were made in Alexandria, Egypt and served as ritual and commemorative vessels in ruler cults in cities throughout the Ptolemaic kingdom. The Athenian provenance of this fragment suggests that these jugs were also exported to places in the Mediterranean basin where the Ptolemies would have wished to assert their cultural position through the imagery on them, which functioned as visual disseminators of the Ptolemaic ideology. Complete examples of these vases allow us to place this fragment in context. It is likely that the entire relief depicted the queen with her back to a pillar pouring a libation with a phiale in her outstrectched right hand, towards an altar. A cornucopia is a feature of all known examples of these oinochoai and alludes to the abundant richness of the Ptolem

Striding tigers (top), racing horsemen (right column), and reverent officials (left column) are stamped into the surface of this underground portal to a tomb. The doorway preserves in stone the post-and-lintel structure, a basic element of Chinese wooden architecture.

Furniture plaque carved in relief with a striding, ram-headed sphinx supported by two kneeling figures. Culture: Assyrian. Dimensions: H. 4 x W. 2 1/2 x Th. 7/16 in. (10.1 x 6.3 x 1.1 cm). Date: ca. 9th-8th century B.C..This rectangular plaque was found in a storeroom at Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was probably used to store tribute and booty collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. It is carved in high relief with a winged, ram-headed sphinx striding to the right supported by the heads and upraised left palms of two kneeling male figures. The male figures raise their right hands with palms facing forward. A long, curving stalk with palmette flowers marks the center of the plaque, and a tree topped by volutes borders the scene on the right. A thin, raised border runs around the other three sides. Openwork furniture plaque with ram-headed sphinx ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian During the early first millennium B.C., ivory carving was one of the major luxury arts that flourished throughout the ancient Near East. Elephant tusks were carved into small decorative objects such as cosmetic boxes and plaques used to adorn wooden furniture. Gold foil, paint, and semiprecious stone and glass inlay embellishments enlivened these magnificent works of art. A recent stylistic study has allowed them to be grouped chronologically, however. The horse (23.3.33) and leaping lion (23.3.28) are done with red preliminary sketches, finalized with a thin, supple black line; this technique resembles that of the Ramesside artists from Deir el Bahri. The incised crocodile (23.3.30) relates best to ostraka known from the Ptolemaic Period. A third group, including a calf (23.3.27), blind harpist (23.3.31), and floral capitals (23.3.34, 23.3.35) appears to be contemporary with the tomb of Nespekashuty. Coffin Footboard depicting Apis bull carrying mummy Third Intermediate PeriodLate Period ca. 750-525 B.C. Originally the bottom of a coffin, this wooden board depicts the sacred Hapy (in Greek called the Apis) bull carrying the mummified deceased on its back. Associated with the sed-festival, at which the pharaoh was rejuvenated after 30 years of rule, the earthly incarnation of the Apis bull was housed near the Temple of Ptah at Memphis. When an Apis bull died, it was elaborately mummified and buried with great ceremony in the Serapeum, a communal tomb for these bulls at Saqqara. The new Apis was chosen by very specific markings on its hide.A running figure of the Apis bull is often seen on the footboard of Theban cartonnages and coffins from the mid-Third Intermediate Period (around 950 B.C.) and later, with examples such as this one, with a human mummy on its back, most common in Dynasties 25 and 26 (between 750 and 525 B.C.). Pictured here are the Scorpion-Men of the mountains of Mashu. The land of Mashu referred, in ancient times, to the land to the west of the Euphrates, coterminous on one part with the northern regions of the Red Sea, on the other with the Persian Gulf. The name appears to be preserved in that of the classic Mesene, and possibly in the land of Massa of the Hebrews. Scorpion men have the head, torso, arms of a human and the body of a scopion. They were also known as aqrabuamelu or girtablilu. Assyrian myth said they were created by Tiamat, the god of chaos. This image was drawn by Faucher-Gudin, from an Assyrian intaglio, and accompanied a book on ancient Egypt by Gaston Maspero.

The base is inscribed with her personal name, Hatshepsut ("foremost of noblewomen") linked with the title God's Wife. Hatshepsut inherited the title while she served as principal queen of her half-brother, Thutmose II. Later in her life, after taking on the titles of King, Hatshepsut passed the title to her daughter, Neferure (see scarab 27.3.326).. Plaque: Two Portuguese Merchants 16th-17th century Edo peoples At its origins, the centralized city-state of Benin was founded by Edo-speaking peoples. The accounts by official court historians and descriptions provided by visitors evoke a vibrant cultural center continually redefined by its leadership through shifting internal and external power dynamics. According to oral tradition, circa 1300, Edo chiefs are reputed to have reached out to the leader of neighboring Ife, Oranmiyan, to establish a new divinely sanctioned royal dynasty. Since then, the investiture of Benins rulers to the title of obas has conferred upon them at once a role of chief priest officiating in important religious ceremonies and presiding over an elaborate structure of palace officials. During the fifteenth century reign of Oba Ewuare, Benins armies were formed and the fortification of its capital with a massive wall undertaken.
