Sarcophagus with Scenes from the Lives of Saint Peter and Christ early 300s, with modern restoration Roman The sarcophagus was carved about the time when Christianity was first recognized as a legal faith within the Roman Empire. The two legendary scenes of the Miracle of Saint Peter Drawing Water from a Rock in His Jail Cell and Saint Peters Arrest in Rome, crisply carved in powerful, deep relief at the left, are among the earliest surviving images depicting Peters special relationship with Rome. When the sarcophagus was identified in 1879, only the lower legs, with scenes from the life of Christ on the right, survived (see image). Incorrect identification of the figures led to inaccurate restoration of the upper portion of the scenes carved in low relief. Originally, four scenes from Christs life decorated the sarcophagus: the Entry into Jerusalem, the Cure of the Man Born Blind, the Multiplication of the Loaves, and the Raising of Lazarus. Hera turning towards Zeus holds the edges of her himation, which covers her head in the gesture of a bride revealing herself to her husband.

(54.61 x 91.44 x 2.54 cm), Terracotta, Italy, 17th century, This terra-cotta relief is the only known study in clay for a sculpture decorating the marble fountain of Saint Damasus in the Vatican. The fountain was erected in the 17th century by Pope Innocent X to mark his restoration of aqueducts built for Pope Damasus in the 4th century. The relief shows Damasus predecessor, Liberius, baptizing new converts to Christianity. Damasus stands behind him, lifting his mantle.
