Eternal Spring modeled ca. 1881, carved 1907 Auguste Rodin French The woman arches her torso in willful surrender to her partner, who bends at his ease to kiss her. Rodin temepered the works overt eroticism by giving it a variety of classicizing titles. First called Zephyr and Earth and later exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1897 as Cupid and Psyche, the compositions true subject is sensuality and impassioned lovemaking. This marble version, commissioned in 1906 by the railroad investor and banker Isaac D. Fletcher, displays the soft, veiled quality of carving associated with Rodins late marbles.. Eternal Spring. Dido, c. 1525. Aurelio Lombardo (Italian, 1501-1563). Marble; overall: 50 x 26.5 x 14 cm (19 11/16 x 10 7/16 x 5 1/2 in.). Artists customarily portrayed Dido as a forlorn lover abandoned by the Trojan hero, Aeneas, but here she is a conquering queen. Dido draws aside an oxhide curtain, a reference to the mythical founding of Carthage (in modern-day Tunisia, North Africa), when she was given an oxhide to demarcate granted land. By cutting it into thin strips she was able to encircle the future city. Dido was likely created for display in a studiolo, a place of study featuring refined works of art appreciated by humanist scholars and aficionados during the Renaissance.

Adam and Eve.Between 1670 and his death in 1673, the Antwerp sculptor Pieter Xaveri lived in Leiden, where he specialized in small figures modelled in clay. Thanks to these signed ivory figurines, we know that he also pursued that specialism. Xaveri has here abandoned his quick and expressive style in clay modelling in favour of fluid, yet restrained forms.

Fisher Boy. Artist: Hiram Powers (American, Woodstock, Vermont 1805-1873 Florence). Dimensions: 57 1/2 x 19 x 16 in. (146.1 x 48.3 x 40.6 cm). Date: 1841-44; carved 1857.Powers modeled Fisher Boy in Florence, Italy, where he earned an international reputation for his idealized subjects. In calling this figure "a kind of Appollino," he referred to ancient Greek depictions of Apollo as the epitome of male youth. However, rather than present his only male nude in a mythological guise, the longtime expatriate sculptor insisted on cloaking it in a modern genre subject--a young fisherman's use of a conch shell to listen for warnings of inclement weather. The Intoxication of Wine ca. 1780-90 Clodion (Claude Michel) French Clodion, whose career spanned the last decades of the ancien régime through the French Revolution and Napoleon's reign, embraced his era's taste for antiquity. Sometimes this preference is more apparent in his choice of theme than in his style. While often Neoclassical, his manner at times remained quite Rococo, as in the present example. Although Clodion received a number of important commissions for monumental marble sculptures, his fame and popularity rested on his skill at modeling small-scale terracotta groups for private collectors. The seeming spontaneity of this composition, a rapturous embrace, in which it appears that the senses are totally abandoned, was achieved only after much meditation. This work is one of the most minutely studied of all the Bacchic orgies that were Clodion's specialty. The front and back show deliberate adjustments of angles, openings, and masses, all checked and balanced as the model

Date: ca. 1723-25.When this sculpture was displayed in the Venetian palace of the Sagredo family, the subject was identified as the mythological huntsman Adonis, beloved of the goddess Venus. Its companion statue of Venus is now lost. Adonis's languid pose and highly polished flesh combine the innocently unaware and erotically tactile in a way that might charm a passing love goddess. However when Adonis is represented prone he should be dying of his wounds. Corradini seems to have used events from another myth--that of the sleeping youth Endymion whose beauty caused Diana to fall for him. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Little Brother and Sister, 1916. Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917). Marble; overall: 56.6 cm (22 5/16 in.). Rodin spent years exploring new ways of representing the human emotions of love and affection experienced at different stages of life. The bodies and gestures of the children here suggest an innocent foreshadowing of the mature couple in the artists celebrated sculpture The Kiss of 1882. Both works feature a strong tactile contrast between the rough-hewn lower area and the smooth surfaces of the nude body above. Upwardly spiraling forms, combined with shifting areas of light and shadow, infuse the sculpture with dynamic energy.

Dürers signature was already so famous in his lifetime that its duplication by other artists was recognized as a crime (even if they were permitted to sell copies of his prints). Ironic, then, that this was made after Dürers death, in his style, falsely monogrammed and backdated. Date: ca. 1868.Investigations into early Christianity constantly renourished Roman Catholicism in the nineteenth century. A best-selling novel by the Irish-born cardinal Nicholas Patrick Wiseman, Fabiola, or the Church of the Catacombs (1854), widely translated, was Alexander Falguière's immediate source for this sculpture. In the novel, the teenage acolyte Tarcisius is conveying the Host along the Appian Way when he is confronted by pagan playmates who order him to reveal it. He refuses and they stone him. Here, the fallen martyr exhibits a bloodied forehead as well as an expression of beatific rapture as he clutches the holy wafer in his arms, faithful to the end. The fatal paving stones lie at his elbow. A photograph in the Musée Rodin, Paris, shows how Falguière blocked out the pose using a

Two Madmen. Between 1670 and 1673, the year of his death, the Antwerp sculptor Pieter Xaveri lived in Leiden, where he made small sculptures modelled in terracotta. Many of them are anecdotal. The meaning of this unusual depiction of two fettered men in a frenzy is unknown.
