Mask of a young person with an unusual hairstyle A.D. 120-150 Roman Period The plaster masks derive from pharaonic traditions, in which the mask served as a substitute for the head of the deceased and as a means of elevating him or her to immortal status. The derivation is often reflected in paintings and texts located on the mantle surrounding the head. Like the painted mummy portraits, the masks suggest strongly individualized appearances and affect Roman fashions in hairstyle, jewelry, and dress. They follow, however, a somewhat different pattern. For example, female masks may have coiffures that combine Roman arrangements of the upper part of the hair with long corkscrew locks that were considered typically Egyptian. Despite the seeming individuality of the masks, most faces were made in a mold. Distinguishing details were worked in the plaster with a spatula or knife. Bust of a Young Nobleman, 2nd century, 28 x 18 x 9 in. (71.12 x 45.72 x 22.86 cm), Marble, Roman, 2nd century, The subject of this bust, found among other portraits in an imperial villa in Turkey, is not known. Scholars have proposed that the subject was a pupil of Herodes Atticus (103-177 A.D.), a Greek intellectual and government official for the province of Asia under the emperor Hadrian. Well known as an orator and writer, Atticus attracted a following among young aristocrates. Although the size of the bust and the incised carving of the eyes are consistent with work from the reign of Hadrian (117-138 A.D.), the unkempt hair style and restrained use of a drill suggest a later date.

Date: 1st quarter of the 5th century B.C..Terracotta sculpture of large scale and high quality is rare in Greek art of the mainland as against that of southern Italy, for example. The proportions and the break at the neck suggest that this exceptionally fine head belonged to a sphinx, possibly the akroterion of a small building. (Akroteria decorated the apex and corners of roofs.) Of particular interest also is the way polychromy is used for such details as the earrings and the headband. Roman The bronze head was discovered on August 11, 1904 near the Arch of Augustus at Susa, a town in northern Italy, not far from Turin, together with some small fragments of one or more bronze statues and a fragment of a marble inscription belonging to an honorific statue. The statue had been donated for Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa (63-12 B.C.), one of Octavian's (later Augustus) closest friends and supporters, by a member of the Cottii family, but nothing suggests that the bronze head and the inscription belong together. Traditionally, the head has been identified as Agrippa, although it cannot be related to Agrippas normal portrait type.
