Marble portrait bust of a man. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: H. 17 in. (43.2 cm). Date: ca. A.D. 69-96.The hairstyle indicates that the head dates from the reign of the emperor Domitian (r. A.D. 81-96). As in the emperor's late portraits, the hair is combed forward in long, slightly curving strands. They end at the forehead in a nearly straight line and curl sharply to the sides. Marble Portrait Bust of a Woman with a Scroll late 4th-early 5th century Byzantine This sensitively carved portrait bust presents a mature woman with a thoughtful expression and piercing gaze; the scroll held in her right hand signals an appreciation for classical learning and marks her as a member of the elite. She wears a mantle, tunic, and head covering, typical dress for an aristocratic woman. Such head coverings did not come into fashion until the fourth century. Bust of Isis by Joseph Cott (1786-1860). The head is a copy of one in the Sala dei Busti of the Museo Pio-Clementino in the Vatican. The Vatican bust has been acquired from Cardinal Albani's collection and published as representing the Egyptian goddess Isis, on account of the lotus-shaped central curls, it is now regarded simply as an ideal female. The English sculptor Joseph Gott worked in Rome from 1822.

. Apostool was the first director of the Koninklijke Museum in Amsterdam, forerunner of the Rijksmuseum. His portrait was sculpted by the royal sculptor Paulus Gabriël, who chose a Classical form whereby Apostools head appears to emerge naturally from a block of stone. This type of portrait, known as a herm, was used mainly for artists and art lovers.

Game - Backgammon Draught - 1 of Set, in Original Cases, 1600-1700. Pinto Collection - Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965.. Made in Eger, Bohemia (Southern Germany). This backgammon games piece is one of a set of 28 games pieces which were made in the town of Eger in southern Germany in the 17th century. The turner has used sycamore, which has been stained black. Another specialized woodworker then built up the portrait of the Roman Emperor Augustus from pieces of wood which were glued together and then carved to make a relief marquetry known as Eger work.

His most famous public commission, the figurative pediment of the Pantheon in Paris (1830-1837), which commemorates great men and was dedicated by a grateful nation, exemplifies these life-long principles. Daniel Webster 1860-68; carved 1868 Thomas Ball American During his successful career as a sculptor, Ball executed several portraits of Massachusetts senator Daniel Webster (1782-1852), a man he greatly admired. For this bust Ball recorded what he described as the renowned orators “godlike” head, including the expansive forehead, furrowed brow, downturned mouth, and large eyes.
