Belvedere torso from Rome, 1st century BC. A heavily muscled naked figure sits on a rock covered by a panther skin. His identity is much debated. The panther skin and the hole for the tail in his back suggests he is the old satyr Marsyas, a much-loved Hellenistic subject. The rock carries the signature of the statue's maker, Apollonias of Athens.

The White Captive. Artist: Erastus Dow Palmer (American, Pompey, New York 1817-1904 Albany, New York). Dimensions: 65 x 20 1/4 x 17 in. (165.1 x 51.4 x 43.2 cm). Date: 1857-58; carved 1858-59.The White Captive portrays a young woman who has been abducted in her sleep (her nightgown hangs from the tree trunk) and held captive by American Indians. Bound at the wrists, she clenches her left fist behind her back in defiance. Palmer was commended for his choice of a "thoroughly American" subject, which consciously alluded to ongoing frontier skirmishes between Indians and white pioneers. In 1859 the marble went on view in New York, and the exhibition, along with that of Frederic Edwin Church's Heart of the Andes, emerged as the high point of that autumn's art season. Study Models of Parts of the Body. This group of small models of parts of the body are carefully copied after famous sculptures, in particular by Michelangelo, in Florence and Rome. They came from the workshop of the Nijmegen sculptor Johan Gregor van der Schardt, who had a successful career in Italy, Nuremberg, and Copenhagen. They are extremely rare examples of the, in part autograph, study material of a 16th-century sculptor.

Sir William 'Hamo' Thornycroft 1850-1925. 'Lot's Wife 1877-8.' In his subject matter and depiction of classical dress, Thornycroft was influenced by the painter and sculptor Frederic Leighton.
