Funerary Relief, late 2nd century-first half of the 3rd century, 23 x 15 x 11 in. (58.42 x 38.1 x 27.94 cm), Limestone, Roman, 2nd-3rd century, Palmyra, an oasis city in the Syrian Desert, was located on a section of the Silk Route, one of the great trade routes connecting Europe and Asia. In about 30 CE, Palmyra came under Roman control as part of the province of Syria and became a wealthy and significant city.

Funerary relief. Dimensions: 20 x 14.96 in. (50.8 x 38 cm). Date: ca. 50-150.This relief is a type of funerary monument characteristic of the prosperous caravan city of Palmyra during the first three centuries A.D. Reliefs with a representation of the deceased and a short identifying inscription were used to seal burial niches in elaborately decorated communal tombs; those with a half-length or bust format became prevalent sometime after A.D. 65. The relief depicts the upper body of a woman dressed in a draped garment, pinned at the left shoulder with an elaborate brooch, who faces directly towards the viewer. Her hair is covered by a turban-like headdress, made up of a wrapped cloth with a twisted border, worn over a diadem that covers her forehead. Long, wavy locks of hair fall behind her ears to her shoulders. Tiny plain rings cover the outer rims of her ears. She wears a long veil over her head which covers both arms, leaving only the hands exposed. The left hand holds a spindle

Head of a Bearded King ca. 14th century French This diminutive head of a crowned king fits into the palm of the hand. The rough, uncarved back of the head nonetheless suggests it was originally part of a larger relief sculpture. The smooth, oval face is symmetrical, with high, lightly arched brows over eyes with fleshy lids. The nose has a slender bridge and broad nostrils, though the tip has broken off. Short, curly hair and a neatly trimmed beard frame these features, and the crown, accented with lily-shaped terminals, rests upon the head. Though carved of white marble, which often went unpainted in late medieval France, the head (including the underside of the neck) is covered in a preparatory layer intended to receive paint, and traces of color and gilding still cling to the prepared surface. This addition to the stone seems to post-date the heads removal from its original sculpted context, hinting at an intriguing later episode in this objects long life. In late medieval France,

Head of a goddess ca. 1295-1270 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside This head once belonged to the statue of an unidentified female deity. The gender is suggested by the lack of a beard, and the simple hairstyle points to the divine status of the subject: mortal women wore elaborately curled wigs at the time this piece was carved. The complete statue represented the goddess seated or standing, either alone or as part of a group of two or more deities and possibly the king.The sculpture was carved from quartzite, a material in which, through the ages, Egyptian artists created their most sensitive portrayals of humans and gods. The Museum owns several masterpieces in this stone, most notably heads of Senwosret III (26.7.1394), Amenhotep III (56.138) and his principal wife, Queen Tiye (11.150.26). This head joins the group with the distinction of being impeccably preserved, as even the delicately aquiline nose is complete. Date: 2nd half of the 5th century B.C..The style of this gorgoneion antefix is of a transitional type between the archaic, more fierce Medusa and the calm Medusa of later centuries. Traces of white slip remain on her face, and a few traces of paint from the once bright yellow hair can still be seen on her head. The irises of her eyes would have been painted blue or black. Greek The presence of both a diadem and a himation (cloak) drawn over the hair suggests that this small exquisitely carved head represents a female divinity such as Hera or Demeter. It may have belonged to a figure that was part of a high relief or the pediment of a small building.
