Terracotta head and torso of a woman late 5th-early 4th century B.C. Greek, Attic Terracotta figures such as this have traditionally been called dolls. Small-scale representations of human figures, mostly women, exist in a great variety of forms; they may have movable limbs, their limbs may be truncated as here, and they may have any number of attributes. Their role, therefore, certainly extended beyond child's play to rituals, the theater, and certainly the grave.. Top of a marble funerary relief with portrait busts of a young man and an elderly woman ca. A.D. 138-141 Roman Although it is broken below, enough of this relief is preserved to show that the man wears a cloak, perhaps a lacerna, and the woman wears what is probably a palla. The shared features of the pair suggest that they are son and mother. The woman's hairstyle is close to that worn by Faustina the Elder, the wife of the emperor Antoninus Pius.. George Washington. Artist: Hiram Powers (American, Woodstock, Vermont 1805-1873 Florence). Dimensions: 31 x 23 x 14 in. (78.7 x 58.4 x 35.6 cm). Date: 1838-44, carved after 1844.Powers based this bust of George Washington (1732-1799) on the authoritative portrait the French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon had modeled from life during his visit to America in 1785. The dignified image of the first president became the most successful of Powers's portraits, with at least thirty-six life-size replicas carved. In some of them, the shoulders are covered in contemporary attire, while in others, such as this example, they are enveloped in a toga-like garment, a standard Neoclassical device. In the drape and the unincised eyeballs, Powers sought to link the bust with antique portraiture. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Bronze handle attachment in the form of a mask 1st century B.C-1st century A.D. Greek or Roman Despite all the change and innovation in Hellenistic iconography, there was also continuity. The three masks in this case demonstrate the tendency to perpetuate, if not to revive, styles going back to the Classical and even to the Archaic period, a tendency that gained impetus from the second century B.C. on, as Greek artists were being called upon to cater to the demands of the Roman art market. Images related to Dionysos, Greek god of intoxication and ecstasy, were well suited to the luxurious and hedonistic life that wealthy Romans led in their villas. These handle attachments were for wine buckets. The wreath of ivy leaves and the fillet crossing the forehead are associated exclusively with the god of wine and his followers. The mask brings to mind Archaic images of Dionysos, who until the fifth century B.C. was always shown with long hair and a beard. But the pointed, equine ears on thes

Lothair I (795-855), also known as Lothar I, was the eldest son of Emperor Louis the Pious and grew up in the court of his grandfather, Emperor Charlemagne. When Louis became sole emperor in 814, he sent Lothair to govern Bavaria in 815. Lothair was crowned as co-emperor and declared as principal heir in 817, and would be overlord to his younger brothers, Pippin of Aquitaine and Louis the German, as well as his cousin Bernard of Italy. When his father died in 840, Lothair ignored all previous plans for partitioning and claimed the whole of the Holy Roman Empire for himself, leading to another civil war which lasted around three years.
