Memorial Head (Nsodie) 17th-mid-18th century Akan peoples This elegant terracotta head is a memorial portrait (nsodie) of an Akan ruler from present-day southern Ghana or southeastern Côte d'Ivoire. It is an idealized representation whose serene expression, well-balanced features, and striated neck suggest the positive qualities such rulers are expected to embody. Created posthumously, royal images like this one were placed with the portraits of previous rulers in sacred areas within the cemetery called asensie. Generally, each royal figure was accompanied by sculptures of courtiers and servants, perhaps to provide aid and comfort to the deceased in the afterlife. Together, they formed sculptural assemblages that honored and preserved the memory of these respected individuals and the chiefly lineages of which they were part. At certain times of the year, the asensie was the focus of prayers, libations, and other offerings that ensured the continuing support and protection of the ancest

Date: ca. 50 B.C..Yakshas (male nature spirits) are personifications of the natural world. Over time they were worshipped as minor gods in both the Buddhist and Hindu pantheons, often functioning as protectors of the earth's riches, and they became associated with wealth. This potbellied dwarf once raised his arms to support a bowl on his head, which identifies him as a "carrier," or bharavahaka yaksha. The closest stylistic parallels to this form are seen on pillar capitals at the great early Buddhist stupa (a moundlike structure designed to hold objects of veneration) of Sanchi, near Bhopal. In all probability this yaksha served as an attendant at a stupa's entrance, its bowl used to receive devotees' donations. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Standing Female Figure A.D. 100-400 Nayarit This female figure features incised, black hair, styled with bangs framing the face in front, and pulled straight back behind a black appliqued headband with an incised zigzag pattern accented with white lines, which ties in the back. Her face is smoothly finished with the brows indicated in relief. The eyes are thickly outlined in black slip. On the lower half of her face, vertical lines of black face paint taper as they extend below the chin. The lips are parted, revealing white teeth outlined in black but not incised. She wears a necklace of three plain appliqued bands that tie in back and from which a simple, wide crescent pendant is suspended in front. Her nose is adorned with a three-looped nose ring attached to her septum. Her undecorated short skirt is distinguished by a burnished black slip, and her legs are a rich shade of sienna. The softened musculature and curving contours allow us to date it to the Ptolemaic Dynasty (300-30 BCE), when Egypt was ruled by the descendants of Alexander the Great’s general Ptolemy, though the hieroglyphic inscription by the extended left leg mentions the Roman Emperor Commodus (reigned 180-192 CE). By the time of Commodus’s reign, Egypt was part of the Roman Empire, and he wished to represent himself to his Egyptian subjects in a manner they recognizedeven if it meant usurping the statue of another person from another time.

Female head ca. 8th-7th century B.C. Assyrian This carved head was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. Originally, this piece may have been part of a composite statuette made of various materials and overlaid with gold foil. The surface is heavily worn and the ivory has split vertically down the face. The large eye sockets were intended to hold colored inlays, as were the rectangular cavities in the wig, although these no longer survive. Traces of a choker, a short necklace worn by women in ancient Near Eastern art, can be seen carved in relief on the neck. The figures beardlessness and the choker suggest this is a female depiction, although it is not clear whether a woman or a deity is represented.Built by the Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II, the palaces and storerooms of Nimrud housed thousands of pieces of carved ivory. Openwork furniture plaque with a striding sphinx. Culture: Assyrian. Dimensions: 4.75 x 1.75 in. (12.07 x 4.45 cm). Date: ca. 9th-8th century B.C..During the early first millennium B.C., ivory carving was one of the major luxury arts that flourished throughout the ancient Near East. Elephant tusks were carved into small decorative objects such as cosmetic boxes and plaques used to adorn wooden furniture. Gold foil, paint, and semiprecious stone and glass inlay embellishments enlivened these magnificent works of art. Based on certain stylistic, formal, and technical characteristics also visible in other media, scholars have distinguished several coherent style groups of ivory carving that belong to different regional traditions including Assyrian, Phoenician, North Syrian and South Syrian (the latter also known as Intermediate).Several ivories in the Metropolitan Museum's collection are from the Aramaean town of Arslan Tash, ancient Hadatu, in northern Syria just east of the Euphrates
