Tomb Chapel of Raemkai: North Wall ca. 2446-2389 B.C. Old Kingdom THE NORTH WALLIn a tomb chamber like this one, which is entered from the north side of the east wall, the east and north walls are closest to the entrance and thus to life on earth. The following scenes are presented on the north wall: outdoor life with herds, fish preparation, baking and brewing, and offering bearers directed toward the niche in the lower part of the wall. The Life of the HerdThe feet of men and animals are still visible in the uppermost preserved register. Scattered bushy plants indicate that this scene takes place on the steppe. Enough remains to reconstruct a bull copulating with a cow on the right, while on the left the birth of a calf is assisted by a kneeling herdsman. To his right, an overseer leans on a staff (although in an unusual detail, the staff itself is missing). The ancient Egyptians were extremely successful cattle breeders, and the frequent depictions of herds in tombs testify to their

Rubbings from the Wu Family Shrine, 20th century, Various, Paper, China, 20th century, This rubbing was taken around 1920 from the carved stone chambers of an Eastern Han Dynasty funerary offering shrine belonging to the Wu Family in Shantung Province. The scene depicts a two-story residence of a Han emperor or nobleman with a homage ritual taking place on the first floor and a gathering of aristocratic women on the second level. Outside the residence is a Fu shan tree complete with birds and an archer drawing his bow at them. This mythological tree is figured into an important Han dynasty legend. It is the same tree as the ceramic version shown below where the Fu shan story is described in detail.

Name Stone of Senenmut ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom A group of large, rough limestone chips in the collection have been inscribed witht the name and some of the titles of Hatshepsut's official Senenmut. These name stones (also called tally stones) were originally built into the terrace retaining walls and facade revetments of Senenmut's tomb chapel (TT 71). The stones were not intended to be seen in the finished structure, rather, they may have been included to symbolize Senenmut's ownership of the monument. Over time, the terrace and revetments collapsed, and the stones were scattered over the hillside below the tomb chapel where they were uncovered by the Museum's Egyptian Expedition during the 1935-1936 field season. Those in New York were received by the Museum in the division of finds.Althought the first part of the title is not preserved, this stone appears to be inscribed "Overseer of the Garden of Amun, Senenmut.".
