Terracotta head of a man ca. 600 B.C. Cypriot The beardless man is shown wearing a band around his forehead and earrings. The head was made in a mold but articulated in several ways. The eyes and eyebrows were executed freehand, while the hair was stamped. Such terracotta sculptures of the late seventh and early sixth century B.C. have come to light at various sanctuaries, notably those at Idalion, Tamassos, and Salamis. Ginevra c 1865-1868 Florence. This statue depicts the title character of the poem ìGinevra,î from the 1822 book Italy by the English poet Samuel Rogers. In the poem, 15-year-old Ginevra disappears on her wedding night; her remains are discovered 50 years later in a chest, where she had hidden as a prank and accidentally trapped herself. Tragic literary heroines were popular subjects for 19th-century sculptors and painters because they appealed to the melodramatic and moralistic sensibilities of Victorian society. Two other works, Elaine (1917.3) by Toby Rosenthal and Nydia, The Blind Flower Girl of Pompeii (1896.77) by Randolph Rogers, more explicitly express similar themes. She looks at the viewer with large serious eyes, accentuated by long lashes. A mass of loose curls covers her head, and some strands fall along the back of her neck on the left side. Medal Presented to Loïe Fuller by the French Government: Orpheus at the Entrance to the Underworld (obverse). Marie Alexandre Lucien Coudray (French, 1864-1932). Bronze; diameter: 7 cm (2 3/4 in.). A temporary theater on the grounds of the 1900 Exposition Universelle was devoted to Loïe Fuller, who by that time had become a cultural icon. The theaters interior was hung with draperies onto which a kaleidoscope of colors shone from stained glass windows and hidden lamps, evoking the diaphanous veils of her costumes. In the foyer was a gallery of paintings, drawings, and sculpture all depicting the dancer. Coudrays medal, Orpheus at the Entrance to the Underworld, was struck to commemorate the worlds fair. This example of the famous Art Nouveau medal was engraved as a gift to Loïe Fuller.

Traditional Egyptian burials included face masks, coffins, or mummy boards with an idealized image of the deceased. Later, in the Roman Period, much more lifelike portraits represented the individualized features of the embalmed person. These were placed within mummy wrappings directly over the head of the mummy. Portraits such as this are often referred to as Fayum portraits” because a great number of them were discovered in the Fayum oasis in Egypt. Date: A.D. 54-68.This young woman is revealed frankly in direct white light, her tiny, elaborate curls and gay light-blue mantle striking a somewhat discordant note with her somber eyes and large, strong face. In her ears she wears ball earrings and around her neck, a double-wound chain from which hangs a small golden figure. The texture of the encaustic medium, worked with brushes and tools, reveals the artist's careful shaping of the curves and dimensionality of the face. A date for this panel in the mid-first century A.D. is indicated by the sitter's hairstyle--modeled on that of the Emperor Nero's mother, Agrippina--as well as other features of the painting. The work belongs to the first generation of painted panel portraits, which only emerged as an Egyptian funerary style just before the mid-first century A.D., to continue for only approximately two hundred years.

Head of Medusa cameo 1840-50, mount ca. 1860 Cameo by Benedetto Pistrucci Italian One of the most elegant of all Medusas, this head borrows freely from the ancient marble mask known as the Rondanini Medusa in the Glyptothek, Munich. The cameo was commissioned from Benedetto Pistrucci for the impressive sum of 200 guineas by a London dentist and collector, Samuel Cartwright, who also ordered a marble bust of himself (National Portrait Gallery, London). The wings and snakes on the cameos frame allude to the caduceus of Mercury, emblem of the medical profession. The existence of a silver copy of the Medusa head bearing the mark of the silversmith Carlo Giuliano (sold at Sothebys in New York in 2006) proves that he was the author of the strikingly handsome mount..
