Stela of a Woman Named Niseret. Dimensions: H. 38.2 x W. 23.7 x D. 12.5 cm (15 1/16 x 9 5/16 x 4 15/16 in.). Dynasty: Dynasty 1. Reign: reign of Djer. Date: ca. 3050 B.C..This stela bears the name of a woman who lived in the early days of the Egyptian state. Her stela was found in the royal cemetery in Abydos, which yielded approximately 360 similar stelae, the majority of which belonging to women. The surface of the stela is weatherworn, but one can still make out the three hieroglyph and the image of a squatting woman, carved in larger proportions. The reading of the name is difficult to translate, as the hieroglyphs belong to the earliest stages of the writing system, before more standard forms were introduced. Thus, her name has been previously rendered as Senba, Niseret, and Nitkhnum. Her figure acts both on the visual level and on the level of the script, serving as a classifier (determinative) for women. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Furniture element with a monkey. Culture: Old Assyrian Trading Colony. Dimensions: 1.02 x 0.71 in. (2.59 x 1.8 cm). Magical Figure ca. 1802-1550 B.C. Late Middle Kingdom-Second Intermediate Period These tablets of unfired clay with attached crude faces were found as a group by the Museum's excavators at Lisht South in loose surface sand west of the mastaba of Senwosretankh, a high official and possibly the architect of the pyramid complex of Senwosret I (ca. 1961-1917 B. C.), east of which he erected his own very elaborate mastaba tomb (see acc. nos. 33.1.2 and other pieces). The mud figures and little coffin (acc. no. 33.1.66) that had contained some of them must have been buried, however, considerably later than the early twelfth dynasty tomb close to which they were found. In fact, during the thirteenth and following dynasties people deposited a number of objects in the by then sacred area around a legendary ruler's pyramid and its dependant monuments, believing conceivably that potent magical powers could thus be released. Queen Offering to the Aten. Dimensions: H. 23.8 cm (9 3/8 in); w. 44.5 cm (17 1/2 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 18. Reign: reign of Akhenaten. Date: ca. 1345-1335 B.C..This limestone block is from a monumental temple scene representing the king and queen makinig an offering to Aten. The face, usually identified as Akhenaten, actully depicts an Amarna queen, probably Nefertiti, following her husband. The king's shoulder is just visible at the left side of the block. Nefertiti wears the royal "afnet" headcloth with a uraeus cobra at the forehead. Two of Aten's hands hold an ankh to her nose and mouth. The hand at the end of a third ray is turned upward to touch the divine cobra on the queen's forehead. This reversal of the hand position is unusual but not unprecedented, and adds an element of artistic tension to the composition. The relief has been carved in the restrained style that came into use in about the eights year of Akhenaten's reign, shortly after the capital was moved to Tell el-Ama
