Relief of an Acacia Tree Shading Water Jars with Drinking Cups. Dimensions: H. 83 x W. 88.5 cm (32 11/16 x 34 13/16 in.). Dynasty: Dynasty 11. Reign: reign of Mentuhotep II, early. Date: ca. 2051-2030 B.C..In this picturesque image of water jars beneath an acacia tree, each jar for ready use topped by a drinking cup, there may be hidden allusions to beliefs about the afterlife. In the Old Kingdom, an institution called "the acacia house" was maintained at the solar cult site of Heliopolis (near present day Cairo). To this institution belonged a group of women who served as mourners and ritual dancers at each pharaoh's funeral. At the head of the procession are two girls without equipment preceded by two men conversing; they are the Eponymous heroes, founders of two of the ten Attic tribes. One of these may ne Theseus, the mythical founder of the Panathenaia.

Painted limestone funerary stele with a woman in childbirth. Culture: Greek. Dimensions: H.: 29 in. (73.7 cm)Other: 4 3/8 in. (11.1 cm). Date: late 4th-early 3rd century B.C..The dying woman leans back, supported on either side by an attendant. Her torso and arms are naked, while two garments--one reddish and one pink--cover her lower body. The composition and subject of the painting derive from Classical Greek grave reliefs. This stele was found in the same underground tomb as the adjacent tomb marker and it probably once served as a funerary monument above ground. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Campaigning in southern Iraq. Assyrian about 640-620BC. From Nineveh. Assyrian soldiers lead prisoners through a landscape of date-palms, with a river beyond. At the far end heads are counted and the booty piled in front of two clerks recording the details in a book and on a scroll.

Syria. Palmyra city. Inscription in cursive Palmyrene (dialect of Aramaic, Semitic alphabet), used between 100 BC-300 BC. Sculpted in the stone. These remains were destroyed by ISIS in 2015, during the Syrian Civil War.
