The Silver Tureen ca. 1728-30 Jean Siméon Chardin French In 1728, Chardin was admitted to the Académie Royale, and achieved immediate and lasting fame as a still-life painter. This picture is unusual in that it combines motifs from the kitchen and from elegant society, including a silver tureen he likely borrowed in order to paint. Exploration of unbalanced compositions and issues of scalenote the overly large fruitare characteristic of Chardin’s early years. Still Life with Peacocks. In Rembrandts time, peacocks were a delicacy for the well-to-do: the meat was used as filling for pasties. After being slaughtered, the birds were hung upside down to drain their blood, as Rembrandt has depictedin this pantry.
