A rival of the Fromanteels both in business and politics, East, a royalist, was appointed clockmaker in 1660 to the newly restored Charles II. Like the Fromanteels he quickly recognized the importance to timekeeping of the Huygens pendulum, but East was not a part of their Anglo-Dutch Protestant circle. The relatively plain wooden case of this clock owes much to the design of the first Dutch pendulum clocks and marks it as an early product of the new technology of clockmaking in England. The movement, with its characteristically heavy brass plates, was greatly modified by later owners; at some unknown time it was reconverted from an anchor escapement to a historically correct verge. It is spring driven, with a duration of a single day, and strikes the hours on a single bell. The case has been newly returned to something approachingLongcase clock. Haarst, Dirk (fl. ca 1740-1770), watchmakerTriple-cased watch ca. 1720 Watchmaker: Firm of Clarke & Dunster This highly elaborate triple-case gold watch is a supreme example of the Anglo-Dutch firm Clarke and Dunster, a partnership between Christopher Clarke and Roger Dunster, active in Amsterdam and London from 1703 to about 1725-1730. This watches most outstanding feature is a finely chased gold bas-relief showing Apollo with his lyre enthroned in a temple. Three female figures appear to introduce him to a man in an 18th century robe, possibly a dignitary for whom this watch was made. Four individual portraits surrounding the main scene represent the four seasons. The iconography of Apollo, the Sun God, and the Four Seasons was particularly fashionable between 1660s and 1750s.. Triple-cased watch. British, London. ca. 1720. Outer case: brass and shagreen, piqué; middle case: gold; dial: white enamel; movement: gilded brass and steel with silver dust cover. HorologyRepeating watch. The scene of a company making music may have been the work of an Amsterdam chaser of French origin. Amsterdam craftsmen were specialized in small-scale depictions chased in gold. The maker of the watchcase, Thauvet Beslay, mounted the scene in a gold ajouré, or openwork, outer case. According to the text engraved on the open book, the scene is from Ovids guide to the art of love, the Ars Amatoria.Close-up of an alarm clock, IcelandClockBarometer on Bracket.Bracket Clock 1756 London. As the son of a sculptor and grandson of an ébéniste, Charles Cressent, who made the case, combined the talents of both and created not only outstanding case furniture but also highly imaginative sculpture in the form of bronzes dameublement. Firedogs, clock cases, wall lights, and mounts for furniture were cast and finished in his workshop, violating the rules of the bronze casters and bronze gilders guilds, to which Cressent, as a furniture maker, did not belong. As a result, three times during his life, legal proceedings were brought against him for employing casters, chasers, and gilders in his workshops. Financial difficulties forced him to organize three sales of his possessions, the first of which was held in 1749. The story is untrue, but she did seem out of touch with the common man. For example, she had a clock just like this in her bathroom at a time when wealthy individuals might have one clock in the whole house. The clocks design comes from a collection of engravings by the painter Hubert Robert, who dedicated them to the young queen. The composition depicts two Vestal Virgins (followers of Vesta, goddess of the hearth) with costumes and hairstyles inspired by classical antiquity, carrying an altar with the sacred fire.
