It would strike the nearest hour on demand when the attached strings were pulled, allowing the owner to hear the time in the dark. The cases with their trelliswork and rosette pattern in brass and blue-stained horn are each others opposites: the clock with a horn ground inlaid with brass and the barometer with a brass ground inlaid with horn. This marquetry is often referred to as Boulle work after the French royal cabinetmaker André Charles Boulle (1642-1732) who was a true master of this technique and to whom clock cases of this design have been attributed.. Date: 1805-10.Over nine-feet-tall, this majestic clock is among the finest and most aesthetically significant examples produced in North America during the Federal period (1790-1825). The manufacture of such pieces was a joint venture between the clockmaker, the cabinetmaker whom he employed to furnish the case, and the patron. In this instance we are able to identify with precision only the man responsible for the works, James Doull of Charlestown, Massachusetts, whose name is painted on the appropriately oversized thirteen-inch dial. Weilbach, c. 1820 compass Azimutkompas in Cardanusring in a wooden box. The compass boiler is weighted with a lead weight at the bottom. The rose is hung in a peculiar way: a small cardanus ring has been installed in the boiler, in which a vertical axis with weight hangs at the bottom like a pendulum. The upper surface of this axis is eroded and provided with a gem. The rose has a hole in the middle, over which a brass bridge runs with a pen straight down, which stands on the gemstone of the ash. Due to the gap in De Roos, a single compass needle is no longer possible: this was taken care of by two parallel needles. The rose is balanced with red lacquer on the bottom. Box and lid carry a stamp of an anchor in a circle. Supporting technological endeavor was a way for noble sponsors to earn intellectual kudos, even to magically gain scientific knowledge as if by osmosis. Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I, for example, famously filled his curiosity cabinet with clocks. This example shows the stars' positions, days of the week with planetary rulers, the time in Roman and Arabic numerals, daylight and nighttime hours, and the date; it even includes a disk for setting an alarm. Its Viennese maker, Behaim, may have collaborated with Metzger, of Augsburg, whose clocks were so sought after that he stretched guild rules to meet the demand.Elizabeth Cleland, 2AcornClock. Porcelain cases made specifically for clocks are less common, and they were prized in England as well as in France. There is evidence that this case originally contained another movement, probably by a French clockmaker, but the case is not much older than the present movement, and the movement may, indeed, have been made as a substitute for the original one. Gray was appointed clockmaker to George II (1683-1760) in 1742. The following year he went into partnership with his future son-in-law, Justin Vulliamy, and together they produced a number of clocks for their first royal patron and, later, for his successor.Clare Vincent, 2007.
