Cocks & Bettridge, Caddy Spoon, 1813/14, silver.Pouch 1730-50 Russian This object is from the collection of Natalia de Shabelsky (1841-1905), a Russian noblewoman compelled to preserve what she perceived as the vanishing folk art traditions of her native country. Traveling extensively throughout Great Russia, she collected many fine examples of textile art of the wealthy peasant class. From the 1870s until moving to France in 1902, Shabelsky amassed a large collection of intricately embroidered hand-woven household textiles and opulent festival garments with rich decoration and elaborate motifs. The Brooklyn Museum holdings include many fine examples including the majority of the garments. Portions of Shabelsky's collection are also housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Art Museum, and the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg. The ring bit is a strong instrument distinguished by the fact that the curb chain is replaced by a ring attached at the top of the mouthpiece, going around the horse's lower jaw. The ring would press the sensitive chin of the horse when the reins are pulled. A small prayer noted in silver shell, consisting of two miniature reliefs of the birth of Christ and the worship of the kings. Both reliefs are made of boxwood and mounted in two hinged, silver half balls with closure and a small chain. The silver ball is completely decorated with extremely refined gothic engraving: on the one hand animals between leaves (a monkey, a dog, an owl and other birds), on the other hand five figures: Eva, a man who creates the ground with a shovel, a man with a man with A falcon, a man standing in the water and a man with a poker and fire. They are representations of the four elements (earth, air, water and fire) and also possible different social positions. The animals represent the 'reverse world' of lust and evil. Around the silver ball with a twisted wire made of turned gold is decorated, while a golden rosible is on the top and bottom.Ornament 18th century French.
