The ebonized travelling case, veneered in pear wood, holds a silver medical garniture that would have contained only the most exclusive remedies, including exotic ingredients from far away countries such as pulverized unicorn horn’ (narwhal horn), bezoar stones, and preparations of curative herbs, next to local favorites. The lid of the écuelle in this example, made by master Goldsmith Nicolaus I Kolb, is engraved with the armorial bearings of the Zobel von Giebelstadt family, several members of which held the powerful positions of Prince-Bishops in various German provinces and were discerning art collectors. Chests of this type served as intimate companions to their princely owners, equipped with the indispensable medicine, implements, and instructions for curing almost any of their ailments. It was common for princes to practice medicine themselves,Travel kit (Nécessaire de voyage) of Queen Marie Antoinette of France, West European Applied Art First Over the Bars, Whitehead & Hoag Company, celluloid, metal, late 19th-early 20th century, containers, Decorative Arts, Matchsafe, Matchsafe. The chest is composed of three parts: a bent panel for the sides, a thin flat base, and a thick closing lid that fits securely over the exterior frame. The four vertical walls are made from a single plank of wood that has been scored, steamed, and bent into shape using a kerfing technique. The front- and back-facing designs of this chest were first carved in shallow relief and then painted; the lateral faces of the container feature painted designs with no carved relief. On the front of the chest, a broad, frontal face with bared teeth and tongue is indicated in black outline. The abstracted face has two double-eyes and elaborations of faces located in the inner eye sockets. Its tongue hangs from a gaping mouth, split into two rounded ovoids. Underneath the face, a human form emerges, positioned between two upright hands painted in Compass. unknown, authorAnonymous. "(US) Colt .45 Pistol Squad Cleaning Kit". Metal. 1911-1945.
