This brass sconce, one of four (see 68.143.6, .15-.16), and its corresponding twelve-light chandelier (68.143.5) originally illuminated the sitting room, or rear parlor, of the mansion built for Jedediah Wilcox at 816 Broad Street in Meriden, Connecticut. Completed in 1870, the house was heralded as one of the states grandest residences. Previously outfitted for gas lighting, the fixture has been electrified for use in the Museum. Likely made by Mitchell, Vance and Co., the sconce incorporates a Néo-Grec decorative vocabulary that features stylized palmettes, fleur-de-lis, and portrait medallions above the gas keys and coordinates with the room's original suite of seating furniture, overmantel mirror, and window cornices (see 68.133.1-.5, .8-10, and 68.134.11).. (2.54 × 6.03 × 8.89 cm) (ornament only), Silver, Benin, 19th century, More than one hundred years ago, the elite of the Danhomé Kingdom in West Africa would have worn these silver ornaments to adorn themselves and show off their wealth, and also to protect themselves from harm and evil. Fashioned by jewelers from imported silver coins, the ornaments were embellished with tiny sculptures that refer to past kings, heroic wars, and the Vodun religion. The coins attached to the ornaments date from between 1873 and 1910, bridging the last decades of the independent Kingdom and the first 15 years of French colonial rule.Earring (One of a Pair) 5th-6th century Korea. Among the trades taught there was silversmithing, taught by a worker who had been favorably passed on by the wardens of the guild. In recompense for his instruction, the teacher-worker could become a master at the end of eight years. Antoine Bailly registered his first mark in 1748 in this way. In 1756, as a Paris maker, he turned in the mark gained through his work at the Hôpital and registered the mark which is found on this piece.. Standish and bell 200367Bottle 18th century China.
