Inspired by John Ruskin, Whitehead invited independent craftsmen and designers to work in traditional crafts, which included furniture, pottery, textiles, and metalwork. This oak linen press epitomizes Byrdcliffe furniture in its simple, rectilinear shape, hand-carved panels, natural wood surfaces finished with transparent stains in nature's colors. The carved panels, of stylized sassafras leaves, were designed by Edna M. Walker, who graduated from Brooklyn's Pratt School of Design where she studied with Arthur Wesley Dow. The cabinet remained in the Whitehead family who generously made it a partial gift to the Museum. The butterflies decorating this cabinet were painted in black and gold lacquer and inlaid with pearl shell. The overall shape of the cabinet and the four small feet show parallels to Japanese art. A large opening in the shape of a swastika in the cabinet's back wall suggests that it was once used to house Buddhist sutras or religious paraphernalia. Dimensions: H. 30-3/4 x W. 38 x D. 22-5/8 in. (78.1 x 96.5 x 57.5 cm). Maker: Bernard II van Risenburgh (ca. 1696-ca. 1767). Date: ca. 1755.Letter writing was a much-practiced activity in eighteenth-century Europe. Horace Walpole, a prolific correspondent himself, reported on September 12, 1775, to his friend Anne Liddell, "There have been known here in Paris persons who wrote to one another four times a day; and I was told of one couple, who being always together, and the lover being fond of writing, he placed a screen between them, and then wrote to Madame on t'other side, and flung them over."1 In order to accommodate this incessant writing, a variety of tables à écrire, large and small, were created. Often fitted with a leatheror velvet-covered writing surface, and with one or more drawers for the storage of quills and other paraphernalia, these pieces were generally placed in the private rooms of the house. This particul. Buffet cabinet of oak, part of a dining room-amicublement, consisting of a closed base cabinet and an open cupboard. The lower case contains two doors with two drawers above. The upper cupboard consists of a rectangular display cabinet with two doors, equipped with a rod distribution of six windows each, which rests on the lower case through two narrow consoles. Two shelves are located on either side. Above the display cabinet is a low-sloping awning that rests on four angle styles and lines. The two front steering are free and contain sliced leaf motifs and volutes. The side rules end left in a horse head and right in a boar head. The cabinet contains copper fittings in the form of hinges, key plates and handles.Dolls house of Petronella Dunois, anonymous, c. 1676 Dollhouse in a cupboard glued with root nut wood on an oak core. The stylized palms and thistles on the back of the chair also appear on the cast-iron coatstand that Dresser designed for Coalbrookdale Company. The trompe l'oeil (fool the eye) tufted seat is recorded on an 1868 design registered by the Masborough Stove Grate Company in England. The spiral turnings on the back stiles and legs, crocket finials, and geometric patterns suggest an assortment of Elizabethan, Gothic, and Renaissance revival motifs in vogue in both America and Europe during the 1860s and 1870s.Table with oval leaves and round baluster tribe, anonymous, c. 1800 - c. 1899 Oval table with an oak leaf with sloping edge on a round baluster tribe of Esdoornhout () On three bent legs. With the lectern fully extended, the piece becomes quite top-heavy, and the spreading, double-pronged feet of its beautifully ornamented tripod base are intended to prevent it from tipping.Several variants of this stand exist; the closest of these belonged in the eighteenth century to a noted collector of decorative arts of his time, Louis-Marie-Augustin, duc d'Aumont (1709-1782).
