Thick padding and soft down cushions provided comfort, and the wings gave protection from drafts. The ferocious-looking lions' heads stand out powerfully against the restrained, almost soothing effect of the strigilated panels on the front. Thisdistinctive type of decoration is restricted largely to sarcophagi made in Rome. The marble is Proconnesian, imported from northwestern Asia Minor. In the 1870s, the furniture made by the Herter firm was influenced by Japanese style, as seen in the marquetry at the top of this chair. The appealed profession is also always mentioned on the glass. On the far left: 'carpenter', with an ax raised in the air to chop on the floor in a piece of wood. To the right of that: 'shrine worker', standing with a flat -planed at a work table, a cupboard to his right. In the middle: 'Book Drucker', two men at a printing press. To the right of that: 'Kleer maker', standing behind a table with needle and thread. On the far right: 'Scheep Maker', a man with a hammer hits wooden pens in the hull of a boat, another man puts a wooden pen in the hull. Images seem to partly go back to the prints the Menselyk Bedryf of Jan and Caspar Luyken, but are not immediately copied or pulled over. The professions and the composition of the images deviate too much from the original prints for this.
