The use of the pendulum necessitated a new case form for the clock movement: early English pendulum clocks were housed in severely architectural wooden cases. The design of this clock, whose applied Doric columns supporting the architrave and pediment are of unusually pleasing proportions, may have been influenced by the work of the English architect Christopher Wren.. These new meanings are thought to be based on the original function of the metate as a tool: like the transformation of the workaday celt into a special ornament, the grinding table became a ritual object. In the Atlantic Watershed region, the source of the present example, the metate's three supporting legs were embellished with complex carvings of a wide range of imagery. On the underside of this metate, which is carved entirely from one piece of volcanic stone, five beady-eyed and snarling felines are worked into the legs. A tour de force of stone carving, metates of this typecalled "flying-panel metates"have been discovered in burials associated with jade objects.. One of the unisons is played from the upper keyboard, and the second unison and the octave are played from the lower keyboard. Pushing the upper keyboard inward couples the keyboards so that all three strings may be played from the lower keyboard. In addition, strings may be played from the three rows of jacks. There is a register that mutes the lower keyboard unison strings by means of small pads of buff leather.Technical description: Case of poplar or lime, exterior decoration of speckle gold in varnish and painted floral designs may not be original; double manual, GG-e3, 2x8', 1x4', buff, upper manual slides in to couple; ebony naturals with pearwood arcades, accidentals of black-stained alizier covered with bone plates; jacks of alizier, tapered, originally with bristle springs, restorer ca. 1900 changed to brass leaf springs and added lead weights; leather-covered jaStool, 17th century, 20 1/4 x 25 1/8 x 25 1/8 in. (51.44 x 63.82 x 63.82 cm), Huang-hua-li hardwood, China, 17th century, The design of this pair of large square stools was inspired by bamboo furniture. One of the centers of the manufacture of luxury bamboo furniture during Ming was Suchou, a region well known for its production of hardwood furniture. Imitating bamboo, the rounded sections of these stools, for instance, required more time to produce than would square section stock. The round corners of the seat frames and leg-encircling stretchers that appear to wrap around each leg are also a direct reference to bamboo construction techniques in which a single length of bamboo would have been steamed and wrapped around all four legs. The interlocked circles are auspicious symbols for permanence, longevity, and when read as double coins, represent wealth and prosperity.Square piano, Longman and Broderip, c. 1782 - c. 1798 Piano on four legs, with ornaments of copper and inlaid on the inside with colorful flowers of wood.
