. Showcase of oak and fruit wood, glued with, among other things, elpro root, rosewood and maple wood resting on four high legs. The cabinet consists of a lower and a surface separated from each other by means of a sheet that protrudes on both sides. The lower case consists of an open block with three drawers, in the middle of an open part and at the top of a tray. The three drawers contain marquettery in the form of lisen and water trial and have plated bronze tractors in the form of butterflies. The tray at the top has a keyhole in the middle. The legs, sliced in stylized leaf shapes, run over in the fluted side styles. A second style has been installed along the side styles. This is down parallel to the side style, but flexes from the center to the ends of the leaf. The resulting gap has been filled with sculpture in the shape of a flower on a handle with leaves. The upper cupboard consists of a display cabinet with two doors. Each door consists of a window whose styles are cut inBookcase , c. 1720. Attributed to Charles Cressent (French, 1685-1768). Cabus This Modern Gothic key cabinet has been attributed to the firm of Kimbel and Cabus on the basis of an illustration of the company's showroom published in the February 1877 issue of the "American Architect and Building News," which shows a cabinet such as this hanging on the back wall. With its florid oak carving and details reminiscent of medieval architecture, the cabinet, which has hooks for twenty keys, is an unusual example of the firm's Modern Gothic furniture designs. Anthony Kimbel (d. 1895) and Joseph Cabus became partners by 1863 and were one of the few firms to show Modern Gothic furniture at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876.. This fountain was carved along with a chimneypiece for the Palazzo Fossombroni in Arezzo, of a favored local stone, pietra serena. It vacillates delightfully between architecture and sculpture, striking a balance among the bases, columns, and entablature, on one hand, and the masks, scallops, and vegetal motifs on the other. In these same years, Mosca executed decoration for Michelangelo in the Medici Chapel; the subtle push and pull of surfaces across the fountain show Mosca's grasp of Michelangelo's intentions.. Following an architecturally inspired scheme that gained favor during the reign of Henri II (1547-59), this example has a rectangular top supported by leaf-carved balusters that form an arcade. Panels at either end feature personifications of seasons: Spring, with flowers, and Summer, with wheat.. It is also the only signed Townsend piece with stop-fluted quarter columns and its original reeded-urn finials. The clock movement and dial are by William Tomlinson of London (active 1733). William Claggett's death in 1749 left Newport without a master clockmaker, so it is not surprising that some of the finest tall clock cases made there house movements by English makers. The form is derived from a design by the decorateur-dessinateur Richard de Lalonde (active 1780-90). Lalonde worked as part of the team of designers and architects in the Menus Plaisirs and subsequently the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne. These departments were responsible for the preparations of ceremonies, major events and festivities and for the order, upkeep, storage and repair of the furniture and art in the French Royal palaces. This console is part of the pieces of woodwork and furniture formerly in the possession of the French decorator and dealer, Georges Hoentschel, whose collection was acquired in 1906 by the financier J.P. The latter two descriptions refer to French eighteen-century furniture styles popular during the reigns of Louis XIV (1643-1715) and Louis XV (1715-1774). Referencing eighteenth-century French sources, furniture in the Rococo Revival style is characterized by curved, cabriole legs, strong C- and S-curves and scrolls, and the extravagant use of carved, naturalistic ornament, particularly flowers. In keeping with the mid-nineteenth-century belief that certain styles were appropriate for specific rooms in the home, the Rococo Revival style was popular for the decoration of formal parlors, or reception rooms, and this étagère, combined with a parlor suite of seating furniture and a fine center table, would have iCabinet bookcase, Regency era.
