The exterior of the lid of the writing box is embellished with rich maki-e decoration, including all major techniques, representing one of the most-well-known episodes from The Tales of Ise. Episode 87 is shown in a refined gold and silver composition, in which a group of noblemen visit Nunobiki Waterfall, near present-day Kobe. Nunobiki is one of the most famous and sacred waterfalls in Japan. Inspired by the beauty of the scenery, the noblemen composed poems about court ranks. The interior of the lid and the inside of the writing box are embellished with patterns of symbolic meaning, such as a pilgrims wooden backpack, a letter, autumn ivy and maple leaves referencing the Mount Utsu scene from The Tales of Ise. It provided space for the storage and display of expensive silver flatware, porcelain, and glassware used during the course of a meal. This massive and resplendent example with an accompanying knife box is a tour de force of early-nineteenth-century cabinetmaking. It includes a unique variety of ornament, from inlaid panels of mahogany veneer, marquetry, and silver-plated copper to verre églomisé, or reverse painting on glass on the panels flanking the central lunette. Dating to the mid-to late-eighteenth century, each cabinet is veneered with ebony panels richly decorated with Boulles signature usage of marquetry, consisting of tortoiseshell, brass, and sometimes pewter, and integrated into a floral and foliate design. The central panel of each cabinet is surmounted by a portrait medallion, with the first piece (1974.391.1a) featuring Henri IV, King of France (1589-1610), whose head is turned in profile to the right; the matching piece (1974.391.2a) contains the portrait of Maximilien de Béthune, duc de Sully (1560-1641), in profile turned to the left. The duc d'Antin, director of the king's buildings, wrote to Louis XIV: "I was at the Trianon inspecting the second writing desk by Boulle; it is as beautiful as the other and suits the room perfectly."1 Not until the Trianon inventory of 1729 were the pieces described as "commodes." (They are often called commodes Mazarines because they stood during the nineteenth century and the first third of the twentieth in the Bibliothèque Mazarine in Paris.)2 From the beginning, the design proved to be immensely popular, although it has also been criticized for an "awkward treatment of forms," meaning, in particular, the four extra spiral legs that were required to support the weight of the wooden cabinet classic over white backgroundIron fitting design on wooden almira, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India Copyright: xSafatxAli/DinodiaxPhotoxDower Chest 1800 American. Hand-painted designs and gilded brackets soften the industrial aspect of the solid iron frame. The Macassar ebony case encloses 3 soundboxes that replace a normal sound board. Decorated on all sides, the Euphonicon can be free-standing. Delicate scrollwork and carving belie its great weight.
