General Notes: Hutzel guide says we have negatives, but we cannot find them. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Iran This ceramic jug has a spherical body that tapers to a small, flat base, a short neck and an everted rim. It is made of gray clay and has been burnished. It was excavated at Yarim Tepe in northeastern Iran, six miles south of the modern town of Gonbad-e Kavus. Yarim Tepe was a small settlement, inhabited from the Neolithic to the Parthian period, with many interruptions. This jug probably dates to the Bronze Age, when this region served as an important link between the emerging cities of Mesopotamia and Afghanistan, one of the few sources of both tin and lapis lazuli in the ancient Near East.. The ewer is oviform, with very high handle, in form of a hydra or monster with three heads, winged body, and forelegs, ending in a serpent's tail; at its junction on the vase is a bearded mask. On the body are four cartouches of the Seasons: Spring is symbolised by a female seated in a garden surrounded by flowers, Summer by a female reaping corn. Autumn by Bacchus on a tun gathering grapes, and Winter by an old man warming himself by a fire; these are separated by masks and other details. Across the brow is a row of beads, above which is a white bandeau and radiate stephane. A similar figure occurs on B, but without the row of beads across the brow. Around the rim between handles: egg pattern above a reserved stripe. Under each handle: palmette-fan, with single side-scrolls that serve as frames for the pictures, below which are three black bands alternating with reserved bands.
