Fragment of a Frieze 11th century This panel and panels 39.40.58, .60-63 are believed to have formed a large frieze along the entrance to a prayer hall that served a densely populated residential neighborhood. The frieze was originally painted in red and blue and included the word al-sultan, a title that first occurred in monumental epigraphy in the eleventh century with Seljuq and Ghaznavid rulers. Furniture plaque carved in relief with volutes and a palmette. Culture: Assyrian. Dimensions: 9.84 x 2.32 x 0.39 in. (24.99 x 5.89 x 0.99 cm). Date: ca. 8th century B.C..This ivory panel was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. Like many other panels from the same storage room, it was part of a chair or couch back or the headboard of a bed. Twenty pieces of furniture were discovered stacked in orderly rows in this room, where they had been stored before the destruction of the Assyrian palaces in 612 B.C. The panel is decorated with four stylized trees, each combining a trunk made up of symmetrical volute stalks below a pair of curling voluted branches. Palm fronds extend from the volutes. Panel with the Annunciation to the Shepherds early 16th century French Until 1950 this panel lined the Great Hall of Highcliffe Castle in southern England. Constructed in the 1830s for Lord Stuart de Rothesay, the castle was furnished in part with stonework acquired form the ruined royal abbey at Jumièges in Normandy, where the panels might also have originated. In all likelihood they once decorated the backs of choir stalls ordered in 1501 by the abbot of Jumièges. Carved on The Cloisters' thirty-five oak panels (50.147.1-38) are scenes from the lives of the Virgin and Christ, each set under an elaborate canopy of single or double arches. The exuberant latticework surrounding the arches provides an almost encyclopedic display of pinnacles, crockets, spirals and other fanciful decorations. Date: ca. 6th century A.D..Beginning in the 5th century, monograms became popular motifs used in the mold-made stucco wall panels that decorated the palaces and houses of the Sasanian elite, and many had symbolic meanings. This panel from the iwan (vaulted hall) of a large house at Umm ez-Za'tir, near the Taq-i Kisra at Ctesiphon, features a group of letters in the Persian script and a lunar crescent above symmetrical feathered wings and encircled by pearls: the motif very likely had protective significance. Half palmettes in the corners would have formed a complete design when this panel was placed within an arrangement with other similar ones. An identical panel is in Berlin in the Museum für Islamische Kunst, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

It probably decorated a wooden casket. The two scenes represented are, above, Christ Appearing to Mary Magdalene after his resurrection--also known as the Noli me tangere ("Do not touch me")--and, below, Christ's Entry into Jerusalem.
