A successful maker of both clocks and watches throughout the Commonwealth period, he remained a royalist and was appointed clockmaker in 1660 to the newly restored King Charles II (1630-1685). The plain, almost egg-shaped watch known as a Puritan watch is commonly thought to have been developed in England in reaction to the elaborately decorated watchcases of the earlier seventeenth century. Watches of the same variety, however, are known to have been made in the Dutch cities of Haarlem and The Hague from about 1625. This elegant example has a worm-and-wheel set-up for the mainspring, a pinned-on cock with a beautifully executed openwork floral design, elegant pillars of a type known as Egyptian, and a gut fusee. It has a duration of sixteen hours.Clare Vincent, 2009. Watch. British, London. ca. 1640. When austere shapes and ornaments became fashionable in the late 18th century, French watchcase makers began making plainer looking, yet highly refined cases. Thanks to the pearls and the floral motifs in opaque enamel, this case is far from dull. They complement the starburst pattern, which was made with a so-called guilloche machine. The translucent enamel applied over this design creates a sparkling effect.two minutes to twelve on vintage watch on black two minutes to twelve o clock on vintage pocket watch on black wooden background Copyright: xZoonar.com/ValeryxVoennyyx 12556313Close-up of a pocket watch, LondonClock-watch ca. 1740-60 Watchmaker: Firm of Marwick, Markham and Recordon. In the mid-eighteenth century, France was the most important location for the creation of clocks and, particularly, their cases. French clockmakers were willing to eliminate pieces of a clocks mechanics that many clockmakers in other countries refused to remove, which allowed their machinery to take up less space. And although similar clocks were created in both England and France, the French versions are far rarer. In the eighteenth century, Cartel clocks and watches became more popular in France, as did clocks that hosted groups of statues, encouraging clockmakers to create the least intrusive mechanics possible. The result is the extremely detailed decorative cases seen in thiShelfclock. Maker: David Wood, 1766-1850Taschenuhr Taschenuhr LicenseRF Copyright: xZoonar.com/OlgaxPopovax 23387922Watch.
