Porcelain; overall: 5.8 x 8.3 cm (2 5/16 x 3 1/4 in.).Pitcher 1875-85 Union Porcelain Works Bret Harte (1836-1902) rivaled Mark Twain in the field of late-nineteenth-century American popular literature. The decoration on one side of this pitcher is inspired by Hartes 1870 poem, "The Heathen Chinee," satirizing the gambling life in California mining camps. On the front of the pitcher, the designer Karl Müller depicted Hartes frontiersman Bill Nye confronting the Chinese immigrant, Ah Sin, during a card game. While the poem was written as an indictment of anti-Chinese racism, Hartes message backfired, and the public read his emphasis on xenophobia literally. Similarly, Mullers design reinforced negative stereotypes at a time of growing anti-immigrant sentiment in the country. On the other side of the pitcher, Muller departs from the Harte poem by depicting the character of King Gambrinus, the mythical Flemish inventor of beer, offering Brother Jonathan, the American "everyman" (and predecessor of Uncle Sam), a glass of foaming brew. Parisian goldsmiths made a wide range of small, personal articles such as snuffboxes; étuis to hold sealing wax, tweezers, or utensils for sewing; souvenirs, which contained thin ivory tablets for note taking; and shuttles for knotting lace. Gold snuffboxes and boxes decorated with portrait miniatures were prized and frequently given as royal gifts, often to ambassadors or members of the court in lieu of cash payments for their services. Coveted and admired, these boxes were produced from a variety of materials. The best were skillfully made of gold and embellished with diamonds, enameled decoration, lacquer, and other luxurious materials. By the middle of the century, the taking of snuff had become an entrenched social ritual, and the snuffbox, too, had become an important social prop. Snuffboxes were considered highly fashionable accessories, with some Octagonal spittoon with lotus plants and willow, anonymous, c. 1720 - c. 1725 Octagonal wagging porcelain with ear, a sphere body and pressed corners, painted in underlaze blue. Due to its light color and glossy glaze, it was ideal for dinnerware. Economically affordable to produce, creamware was imported to America in large quantities. Although much creamware was used in America, it is rare to find pieces associated with a particular family. This dinner service (36.22.1 -.38) bears the initials SBW” for Samuel Blachley Webb.
