Process print.Table or bracket clock ca. 1720 Clockmaker: George Graham The eight-day movement of this clock has a verge escapement, a halfseconds-beating pendulum, and rack-and-pinion striking, and it strikes hours. It is unusual for its large size and for the thickness of its brass plates, which are held apart by eight latched pillars. The undecorated back plate is numbered 613. Apertures in the dial indicate the day of the month and allow a view of the oscillation of the false pendulum (ornamented with a sun image) that is connected to the real pendulum. The two smaller chapter rings above the chapter of hours are for the regulation of the pendulum (left) and for turning on or off the striking of the clock (right). Graham, a journeyman in the establishment of Thomas Tompion, married Tompions niece and was taken into partnership about 1704. He later inherited Tompions business and retained Tompions system of numbering the products of the workshop. Continuing Tompions work, Graham perfected theLawrence Phillips, Clock, c 1938 ClockWatch of gilded copper, Bourguin le Jeune, c. 1800 - c. 1900 Gilded copper watch with white enamelled dial with date instruction. Apprenticed in 1692 to Charles Halstead, he later became a journeyman assistant in the workshop of Thomas Tompion. By 1706 he had set up his own establishment in Devereux Court, Fleet Street. His clocks and watches are known for both their inventiveness and fine craftsmanship. This table clock, or bracket clock, as the type has been commonly called, is unusual owing to its large size and elegant proportions. The eight-day springdriven movement can be adjusted to strike the hours or remain silent.. Table or bracket clock with calendar. British, London. probably ca. 1720. HorologyClock 1825-30 Simon Willard In 1822 the highly inventive and successful Massachusetts clockmaker Simon Willard advertised that "the President of the United States has granted him a PATENT for his newly invented ALARUM TIMEPIECE that will run for 8 days with one winding, and keep exact time." Accompanying the newspaper advertisement was a wood engraving of a clock identical to this one, down to its ball feet and gilded brass appliqué on the octagonal base. Nowhere in the advertisement is the timepiece referred to as a "lighthouse clock," a name assigned to it at a later date on account of its shape. This example retains its original blown-glass dome with applied swirl decoration. The clock has a dummy bell and no alarm, however, indicating that the latter was optional. From the seventeenth to the late-eighteenth century, clock exteriors were also fashioned from brass. Often called "birdcage clocks", the chief feature of lantern clocks is a dome formed by a bell, with open fretwork connecting the bell to the dial. Another feature of this type of clock is that its driving weights and pendulum hang outside the clock's small case rather than being hidden inside a larger case.
