Date: probably ca. 1720.Daniel Delander was the most distinguished member of a long-active family of London clockmakers. Apprenticed in 1692 to Charles Halstead, he later became a journeyman assistant in the workshop of Thomas Tompion. By 1706 he had set up his own establishment in Devereux Court, Fleet Street. His clocks and watches are known for both their inventiveness and fine craftsmanship. This table clock, or bracket clock, as the type has been commonly called, is unusual owing to its large size and elegant proportions. The eight-day springdriven movement can be adjusted to strike the hours or remain silent. (238.8 × 48.3 × 26.7 cm). Maker: Clockmaker: Thomas Tompion (British, 1639-1713). Date: ca. 1700.This eight-day clock with anchor escapement and 11.4 seconds-beating pendulum is numbered 344. Although the seconds-beating long pendulum (approximately 39 inches in length) became standard for longcase clocks in the late seventeenth century, a few clockmakers experimented with longer pendulums. It proved remarkably difficult, however, to make them reliable, and only the best English clockmakers were successful. This example, measuring about 60 inches in length, produces a slow tick and necessitated a seconds dial with only four divisions of each five-minute interval. Tompion's fine workmanship and ingenious designs contributed greatly to the fame of English clockmaking. For another Tompion clock with an unusual movement, also in the Museum's collection, see 1999.48.2, known as the Graves TompPair-case watch with quarter repeating mechanism. Culture: British, London. A number of these automata survive; they were incorporated into objects probably intended for export to both China and India, but they may also have been made for English patrons. A large number of items intended for export were included in Coxs lottery of 1773, and more were auctioned in London after he declared bankruptcy in 1778, so some of these amusing “toys” may have found their way into European possession by happenstance.[Clare Vincent, 2007.
