The familiar longcase, or grandfather, clock exemplified here was developed in England in the latter part of the seventeenth century in response to improvements in the technology of the pendulum. The older narrow-trunked case gave way to aform with wider proportions, which allowed the new, long pendulum to swing undisturbed. The gilded and matted dial of this splendid clock has a silvered-brass skeleton chapter of hours typical of Knibbs finest work. Knibbs movement goes for eight days on a single winding and strikes the hours and quarters on separate bells.. Longcase clock with calendar 205601Frank M Keane, Banjo Clock, c 1939 Banjo ClockWatch. Octagonal crystal watch with an oval interior. To the watch a neo-rococo chatelaine with four chains.Watch probably ca. 1655-60 Watchmaker: Charles Bobinet Rock crystal was not the only mineral used for making watchcases, and Charles Bobinet was noted for supplying movements for cases of various kinds of hardstones. The cases often exploited the pattern of the stone, as is evident in this watch. Equally effective is the pristine enamel dial, clearly calibrated to show fifteen-minute intervals indicated by the single hand. These dials were derived from those of the enameled watchcases originally developed in France.. Very much in the Roentgen style is the use of finely grained mahogany veneer, applied in a single sheet from the frieze at top down to the base, combined with brass inlay and gilt-bronze mounts (see also another clock by David Roentgen in The David Collection, Copenhagen, inv. no. M 26). The stable base, large enamel dial with bold roman numerals, and steel hand that indicates the day of the month make it the ideal timepiece for a desktop. In fact, a similar clock that belonged to a descendant of David Roentgen until 1904 is seen standing on the top of a writing commode in a contemporary photograph;1 the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg displays a related model on a Roentgen rolltop desk.2In keeping with the quiet elegance of the case, the movement signed by Élie Preudhomme, marks the htime concept with hourglass isolatedWall Clock Antique. Culture: Swiss, Geneva. Dimensions: Diameter (case): 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm); Diameter (back plate): 1 5/16 in. (3.3 cm). Maker: Watchmaker: Jean Rousseau (Swiss, 1606-1684). Date: ca. 1650-60.Constantijn Huygens wrote to his brother, the brilliant mathematician Christiaan Huygens, from Geneva on January 5, 1650, that he had just bought a watch "á la mode" with a case of rock crystal that permitted a view of the movement such as one would see if the case were made of ice. Indeed, Geneva was well-known for its rock crystal watchcases made from a local source of the mineral. The movement of this watch has a verge escapement, and it is probably the product of the younger Jean Rousseau, a son of a master clockmaker in Geneva and the great-grandfather of the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. From the seventeenth to the late-eighteenth century, clock exteriors were also fashioned from brass. Often called birdcage clocks”, the chief feature of lantern clocks is a dome formed by a bell, with open fretwork connecting the bell to the dial. Another feature of this type of clock is that its driving weights and pendulum hang outside the clock’s small case rather than being hidden inside a larger case. View more. Lantern clock. ca. 1685.
