Approach to a Mountain Village with Horsemen on the Road ca. 1501 Fra Bartolomeo (Bartolomeo di Paolo del Fattorino) Italian This is a significant early example of pure landscape drawing, produced infrequently in European art in the early sixteenth century. The sheet comes from a now-disbound album of landscape studies by Fra Bartolomeo assembled by an eighteenth-century collector. Fra Bartolomeo likely produced these drawings outdoors during his travels in and around Florence, often to Dominican establishments (he was a member of the Dominican Order). The Reviewers' Cave 1765 John Hamilton Mortimer Mortimer's dynamic early pen-work is used here to develop a frontispiece for Lloyd Evans's "The Powers of the Pen: A Poem" (1768), a verse satire aimed at literary critics. The artist also etched the related print, and mined Alexander Popes "Dunciad" and "Rape of the Lock" for suitable imagery, with the rocky setting suggested by the latter's "Cave of Spleen." The drawing consists of two sections, with judges seated at right, one in the front row resembling Samuel Johnson, whose pomposity Evans lampoons. As workers bring in bushel baskets of books to be reviewed, a corpulent figure on a dais presides over an assemblage that includes a braying donkey. Above, Dullness lolls on clouds near flayed faces, or masks, hung from cords. At left, Mortimer sketched ideas for the main design. Design for the Decoration of a Wall with Grotteschi in the Antique-Style 1545 Luzio Luzzi (also known as Luzio Romano, Luzio da Todi) This drawing was recognized as a typical work of Luzio Luzzi by Eraldo Gaudioso in 1976 (see Bibliography: Gaudioso 1976 and 1981), who also identified the design as preparatory for the room in the Castel Sant'Angelo, nicknamed "Cagliostra." This is a large hall close to the loggia of Pope Paul III Farnese (1534-1549). The room was entirely decorated in fresco by Luzio Luzzi, a collaborator and associate of Perino del Vaga, as documented by payments to the artist of May and December 1545..
