Subject: Addressed to William Grieve (British, 1800-1844); Addressed to Thomas Grieve (British, 1799-1882). Date: March 1831.This letter from Pugin relates to stage sets being made for a ballet inspired by Sir Walter Scott's "Kenilworth," produced at the King's Theatre, London in March 1831. A life-long enthusiast for the theater, the aspiring architect was already an experienced stage carpenter after a season at Covent Garden. Here, he promises the leading scene painters William and Thomas Grieve that he will arrive on Monday at ten to assist with the sets, and insists that it is the pleasure of their company, rather than the thought of financial gain, that compells him. The founder opened a New York showroom in 1827 at 53-54 Broad Street, and the company flourished under generations of family leadership. Expansion necessitated moves around lower Manhattan, with name changes reflecting shifts of management-James Brewster & Sons operated at 25 Canal Street, James Brewster Sons at 396 Broadway, and Brewster of Broome Street was based at 372 & 374 Broome Street with a repository (showroom) on 14th Street & Fifth Avenue. By 1874, Brewster & Company had 400 employees and combined warehouse and factory facilities at 47th & 48th Streets and Broadway. Also included are estimates as well as record drawings (measured drawings) of buildings not designed by Butterfield. William Butterfield (1814-1900) was a British architect known for the Gothic revival style he championed. He studied with E. L. Blackburne and set up his own practice in 1840. A member of the Cambridge Camden Society, later the Ecclesiastical Society, he contributed designs to their journal The Ecclesiologist. Most of his work was for church designs, apart from that for schools and colleges (Rugby School and Keble College Oxford), and the Winchester County Hospital.
