Sculptor's Studio. Artist: Louis Moeller (1855-1930). Dimensions: 23 x 30 in. (58.4 x 76.2 cm). Date: probably 1880s.The many late nineteenth-century representations of studios reflected an increase in artists' self-esteem and in patrons' curiosity about their lives. American sculptors of the period collected prints, photographs, statuettes, and plaster casts for reference in making their own works. The unidentified sculptor whose studio Moeller portrayed here had gathered, among other objects, casts after the Assyrian relief of a dying lioness from Ashurbanipal's palace (on the back wall) and a section of the north frieze of the Parthenon (above the door). His equipment, including wooden sawhorses and the crude tabletop they would have supported, is piled against the walls. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Model of from a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci Following incessant research on the method used by Leonardo da Vinci to form tiles, with a wooden mould, a drawing by Leonardo, available online on the Royal Collection website, shows a machine to make tiles, a bench from work and an extruder for clay and the method for preserving the dough. Provenance: The sheet was left by Leonardo as a legacy to his pupil Francesco Melzi; from whose heirs it was subsequently acquired by the Roman architect Pompeo Leoni, in about 1582-90; Thomas Howard second, count of Arundel, came into his possession before 1630; and probably later it was ceded to Charles II, step to the Royal Collection in 1690.

Tray for twelve schnapps glasses German, Nuremberg 1750-75 The form of this piece is unprecedented in the seventeenth century either in silver (the usual prototype for new glass forms) or in glass. It is close to the idea of cruet frames with central handle which were common in the eighteenth century. The signs of the zodiac are contained in swiftly sketched rococo cartouches, and there is a mixture of periods of costume worn by the various figures, including one in the garb of the sixteenth century and others from the seventeenth century. For all these reasons, it seems probable that the glass was decorated in the third quarter of the eighteenth century.
