Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: Temple-Altar of Jove, as a Youth 16th century School of Marcantonio Raimondi Italian This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title ‘Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae first appears. Lafreri envisioned an ideal arrangement of the prints in 7 different categories, but during his lifetime, never appears to have offered one standar

The retable is a kind of pavilion, with two columns supporting on either side the circular part of the entablature, and two of its short, straight, lateral parts. All the columns stand closely near each other. Inside is a group of the Ascension of the Virgin. Above the central part is a dome with a medallion, supported by two sitting angels at the front, and a female statue with a cross on top. Above the lateral parts are two statues. The socle has two rows of panels. The upper ones are decorated with festoons, the lower ones are undecorated. In front of the central one are respectively the mensa and the tabernacle. Laterally are two angular projecting pedestals with statues. Eschutcheons are in their front panels. Usual background. Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash on lined off-white laid paper. Sepulchral monuments, Giuseppe Barberi, Italian, 1746-1809, Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash on lined off-white laid paper, The main design represents the elevation of a monument with a high pedestal. Its lower part is quadrangular with obliquely protruding bases with figures at the corners. The upper part of the pedestal has the shape of a lower part of a column in bands upon the two drums of which figures are represented. On the top sits what seemingly is an old man holding a portrait medallion. Beside at left and partly drawn over the figure at left is the elevation of a similar monument, but with an entire column with a standing figure on top. A sarcophagus stands at the front of the pedestal. A plan of this monument is between this and the first mentioned designs. Above at left is a design with a similar column, but the pedestal has the shape of a sepulchral chapel with the figures sitting upon it. Below are steps and shown at left is a candelabrum.
