Wall decoration with vegetal and geometric design ca. 6th century A.D. Sasanian Stucco reliefs were commonly used to decorate the iwans and reception halls of elite Sasanian houses. Many examples were found in excavated houses in the Ctesiphon area including this fragment from Umm ez-Zatir which probably formed part of the decoration of an arch. The use of molds to make stuccos allowed for the creation of large scale repetitive patterns such as geometric and vegetal motifs. These two wood portals, carved with scenes from the Volsung Saga, are from a church at Hillestad, Norway. The Volsung Saga is an Icelandic prose saga that was probably assembled in the 12th or 13th century. Its heroine, Gudrun, brings about the ruin of the Volsungs, who are led by Sigurd. Sigurd is shown with his thumb in his mouth at the bottom of the left portal.

Panel with a Vine Scroll with Grapes 6th-7th century The monastic community of Bawit, founded in the 300s by Apa (Father) Apollo at a small village, grew to consist of numerous complexes with residences, chapels, and service structures and two large churches profusely decorated with sculptures and paintings, often reused from other sites, all affiliated with the Coptic church. The more important buildings were decorated with courses of sculpted stone freely combining floral and geometric motifs inspired by classical art - rosettes, acanthus leaves, meander patterns - with more recent Christian themes. These sculptural elements, demonstrating the Byzantine love of complex patterning with lush textures, were originally painted in rich, vibrant colors like those surviving in textiles.. Left row: A candelabrum with a base like those in 1938-88-1468. Upon it a griffon crouch and support an ovoidal medallion with a lying putto. Winged half figures of children connect the medallion with an oblong frame with a female figure. Above it is a half figure supporting another ovoidal medallion. On top is a plant. Second row: two entwined garlands form an ovoid in which hangs a medallion. Third row: A plant candelabrum with a standing figure in the center and with an oblong framing a lozenge further up. Fourth row: A candelabrum in the scheme of a stem forming the frames of two ovoids and of an oblong in the center. Figures are in each of the three compartments. Above and below are oblongs. Fifth row: two parts of shells alternate four times with ovoids with figures. ABove and below only quarter of the shells are shown. Date: ca. 1790. Breastplate ca. 1510-15 Italian, Milan The hatched ground and lively nature of the decoration are excellent examples of the highest quality of etching found on Italian armor in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Also characteristic are the central band of classically inspired trophies and the horizontal frieze with depictions of saints. Dado Panel 10th century The writing on this panel reads al-akhirin, or "posterity." As the last word in the Qur'anic verse 26:4 ("And ordain for me a goodly mention among posterity"), its presence here may indicate that the rest of this inscription once went around the room where the panel was found. Although calligraphy adorned several of the buildings at Nishapur, this panel was the only inscribed architectural panel found in a domestic setting, perhaps indicating the building was also used for religious purposes..
