Lower row: two left halves of projects. Frame and top have the shape of cornices of an entablature, the leg has the shape of a wingless chimera. A support in the center is added, being at left a column with a row of figures representing women around the shalf, at right a panel supporting a cube with a figure. Leg and support are connected in the left project by a festoon. The lower parts are lacking in both designs. Partly above the left one is drawn in graphite part of a sketch of a vase. Monument of King Louis XVI of France, Giuseppe Barberi, Italian, 1746-1809, Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash on lined off-white laid paper, The architectural setting is a niche with a rectangular plan, and with an arch above an entablature. The framing parts of the columns are drawn. The pavement of the niche is in the height of the upper edges of the bases of the columns. Upon it stand upon separate bases the sarcophagus and two crowned women (Jusice or Royalty), the left one with what seems to be the sword, and support a cloth hanging in front of the sarcophagus. Above is a pedestal, upon which a winged female (Victory) putto sits at left, and a putto kneels at right, supporting together the oval medallion with the bust portrait. Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: Doric order ca. 1537 Monogrammist G.A. & the Caltrop Italian This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title ‘Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae first appears. Lafreri envisioned an ideal arrangement of the prints in 7 different categories, but during his lifetime, never appears to have offered one standard, bound set of prints.
