Evening attire was especially luxurious, consisting chiefly of silk garments decorated with gold and silver thread or expensive fur. Naturally, clothes like these called for costly accessories, which a true lady wore sparingly. An outfit had to work as a whole: all of the details, from headbands to high-heeled shoes, had to fit together. And that, in turn, required money, time, care and, most importantly, bon ton (good taste).

Gazette du Bon Ton. Art - Modes & Frivolités: Advertising Material. The Gazette du Bon Ton also included advertisements: for shops selling fashions and fabrics, jewellers, hairdressers and beauticians. These ads were also well designed; many were drawn by the same artists who supplied the fashion plates. Even the smallest ads were presented with flair and in a style that was befitting of the whole.

The Fashion Magazine as Temptress. The first fashion magazines were sold only by subscription. They have nondescript covers, with neither text nor image. This changed at the end of the 19th century when the publications came to be displayed in stands and shops. Publishers went to great lengths to entice potential buyers by means of attractive covers.
