The Queen of the Fishes: Plate 12, 1894. Lucien Pissarro (British, 1863-1944). Color woodcut; book page: 19.2 x 13.3 cm (7 9/16 x 5 1/4 in.). Pissarro, son of the French Impressionist artist Camille Pissarro, moved to England in 1890. By 1894 he and his wife, Esther Bensusan Pissarro, had bought a printing press and established the Eragny Press. Influenced by William Morris, they were involved in every step of the production process: designing, cutting the woodblocks, setting type, and printing. The first book published by Ergany Press, The Queen of the Fishes, is based on an old fairy tale in which a peasant boy and girl escape the hardships of their lives by fantasizing that they have been turned into a giant oak and a splendid fish, respectively.

George Barbier (1882-1932) was one of the great French illustrators of the early 20th century. Born in Nantes, France on October 10, 1882, Barbier was 29 years old when he mounted his first exhibition in 1911 and was subsequently swept to the forefront of his profession with commissions to design theatre and ballet costumes, to illustrate books, and to produce haute couture fashion illustrations. For the next 20 years Barbier led a group from the Ecole des Beaux Arts who were nicknamed by Vogue 'The Knights of the Bracelet'a tribute to their fashionable and flamboyant mannerisms and style of dress. Included in this élite circle were Bernard Boutet de Monvel and Pierre Brissaud (both of whom were Barbier's first cousins), Paul Iribe, Georges Lepape, and Charles Martin. During his career Barbier also turned his hand to jewellery, glass and wallpaper design, wrote essays and many articles for the prestigious Gazette du bon ton. In Greek mythology, Persephone (in Roman, her name was Proserpina) was the goddess of fertility, and the daughter of Zeus (Jupiter) and Demeter (Ceres). Hades (Pluto, and also Dis), the god of the underworld, stole her and carried her off to his domain in the Underworld. Demeter later convinced him to allow Persephone to return to the upper world for part of the year. Because Hades had tricked her into eating pomegranate seeds (some say 4, some say 6), she had to remain in the underworld for part of the time (the months equivalent to the number of seeds she ate). When she returns to earth, the plants blossom and it is springtime. And, so the cycle of seasons depends on her mother's mood - happy when she is on earth and sad when she is in the underworld.
