In Greek mythology, the sphinx was a monstrous winged creature with the head of a female. It met any traveler/visitor trying to enter the city of Thebes and asked the person to answer a riddle (what walks on four legs when it is young, two in as an adult, and three as an old person - answer - human). Death was the reward for all who failed to answer. Oedipus answered the question, as seen here with the sphinx and the skeletons of those who failed, and was able to enter Thebes. Oedipus was the mythical king of Thebes.

Shunga is a Japanese term for erotic art. Most shunga are a type of ukiyo-e, usually executed in woodblock print format. While rare, there are extant erotic painted handscrolls which predate the Ukiyo-e movement. Translated literally, the Japanese word shunga means picture of spring; 'spring' is a common euphemism for sex. The ukiyo-e movement as a whole sought to express an idealisation of contemporary urban life and appeal to the new chi nin class. Following the aesthetics of everyday life, Edo period shunga varied widely in its depictions of sexuality. As a subset of ukiyo-e it was enjoyed by all social groups in the Edo period, despite being out of favour with the shogunate. Suzuki Harunobu (1724 July 7, 1770) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, one of the most famous in the Ukiyo-e style. He was an innovator, the first to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765, rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints. Harunobu used many special techniques, and

Germany. Pictorial map depicting Germany as a lady dancing. Rhyme about the country in lower margin. In Lancaster and Harvey's Geographical fun. London : Hodder and Stoughton, 1868 or 1869.. Back to School: The unique atlas referenced here contains twelve maps of European countries, each being portrayed as a stereotypical caricature of the location. Similarly to the creators of the Eagle Map, the atlas author, William Harvey, believed that visualizing geography in such a way would make the subject easier to understand, and more educational. Thus, he drew the major European countries as human figures reflecting national stereotypes, such as England in the form of Queen Victoria, and Scotland as a bagpipe player dressed in a kilt. Germany portrayed as a lady dancing is reproduced here... , Germany

Falling Leaves, Allegory of Autumn 1872 Hugues Merle French Merle, a friend and sometime rival of Bouguereau, was known for the sentimental images of contented rustic families that he regularly exhibited at the annual Salons. In this painting from 1872, Merle tried his hand at a loosely mythological scene of a languid young woman in the guise of Fall. Catharine Lorillard Wolfe bought the melancholic picture from the New York branch of the art gallery Goupil & Co. on February 21, 1873, while still in mourning for her father. A critic who saw the work in Wolfes home remarked, "Here, under russet foliage, a ripe beauty passes…. Nearby, disguised so much in shadow as to be almost invisible, little Love is running away; for this bereavement of affection is the plague of lifes Autumn, as loves importunity is the plague of its Spring.".
