Francois-Auguste-Rene Rodin (12 November 1840 17 November 1917), known as Auguste Rodin, was a French sculptor. Although Rodin is generally considered the progenitor of modern sculpture, he did not set out to rebel against the past. He was schooled traditionally, took a craftsman-like approach to his work, and desired academic recognition, although he was never accepted into Paris's foremost school of art. During his later creative years, Rodin's work turned increasingly toward the female form. He concentrated on small dance studies, and produced numerous erotic drawings, sketched in a loose way, without taking his pencil from the paper or his eyes from the model. In July 1906, Rodin was enchanted by dancers from the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, and produced some of his most famous drawings from the experience.

In the last decades of the nineteenth century, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his fellow British artists of the avant-garde Aesthetic Movement increasingly questioned the ideal of finish” and publicly exhibited sketches and studies like this one. Rossetti made countless drawings and paintings of his lover, the textile artist and model Jane Burden Morris. This work likely began as a study for the 1868 painting La Pia de’Tolomei, but Rossetti made it into an independent work of art, representing silence with the iconography of the veil and the peach branch, which he described as the symbol used by the ancients; its fruit being held to resemble the human heart and its leaf the human tongue.” The passages of blank, unmarked paper likewise suggest the idea of silence. In this painting by Warwick Goble (1862-1943), a Victorian illustrator of children's books, the Hindu princess Damayanti, a princess in the Vidarbha Kingdom, is approached by a swan (pictured here) telling her how great the king Nala was. Nala was the king of the kingdom of Vidarbha and a sage told him of beautiful Damayanti. As a king, he could not go seek her love and her hand in marriage, but a swan came to him and offered to do his bidding. The gods, however, also wanted Damayanti and they chnaged themselves to appear like Nala, but Damayanti was not deceived when she went to choose her husband. She chose the Nala who was not perfect, who was blinking.
