The caption for this illustration reads: I shuddered with horror in a few moments had Sharatz the Veela overtaken. The I is Marko, the Serbian hero, and Sharatz is his horse. The figure at right is a Veela. In Slavic and Serbian mythology, the Veela was a supernatural being. They were said to like dancing and to marry mortal men on occasion. The illustration is from a 1921 book on Serbian myths and legends.

Study for In the Woods, Evening, 1892-94. Alexandre Séon (French, 1855-1917). Colored pencils on laid paper; sheet: 35.2 x 23 cm (13 7/8 x 9 1/16 in.). In this drawing of nymphs holding lyres, Alexandre Séon hoped to depict, in his words, the spirit of the forest.” He was inspired by fairy-tales he heard as a child about the woods near the remote village where he grew up. By applying colored pencils to a roughly textured sheet of paper, Séon evoked the hazy tones of twilight and gave the sheet a dreamlike tenor.

The 1917 caption reads: 'Alas of all the ships I see is there never one that will bring my lord home Canterbury Tales by Chaucer - Dorigen.' Franklin's Tale is one of The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. Published about 1400, it focuses on issues of providence, truth, generosity and gentillesse in human relationships. The story opens and closes by recounting how two lovers, Arveragus and Dorigen, decide that their marriage should be one of equal partnership.

Genoveva 1820-84 Adrian Ludwig Richter German Richter's life-long interest in medieval legend is evident in this delicately detailed watercolor that depicts Genoveva of Brabant, wife of the 13th century count palatine, Siegfried of Treves (now Trier in the German Rhineland). While her husband was away at war, she was falsely accused of adultery and condemned to death. Spared by the executioner, she fled to the forest of Ardennes in France, and lived with her son in a cave for six years, fed by a female deer. Based on a large etching Richter made some thirty years earlier, in 1848, this image uses delicately controlled color to suggest a forest idyll in which animals nurture and protect two wronged innocents.. Sindbad the Sailor is of Middle Eastern origin. His tale is, in modern times, often connected with and/or included in The Thousand and One Nights, or the Arabian Nights, but it originally was not part of it. One of the fantastic creatures that Sinbad tells attacked his ship was a giant mythical bird, called the roc. This early 1900s illustration shows a roc with Sindbad hanging on to one of its talons.
