The 1917 caption reads: "Alas of all the ships I see is there never one that will bring my lord home Canterbury Tales by Chaucer - Dorigen." Franklin's Tale is one of The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. Published about 1400, it focuses on issues of providence, truth, generosity and gentillesse in human relationships. The story opens and closes by recounting how two lovers, Arveragus and Dorigen, decide that their marriage should be one of equal partnership.

This early 1900s illustration accompnied a book on Homer and his epic Odyssey for young girls and boys. It shows Morning, or rosy-fingered dawn as Homer (fl. c. 700 B.C.) called that time period, rising with her companions in the sky. Homer, throughout the Odyssey and also the iliad, uses repetitively epithets such as rosy-fingered to modify and enhance nouns. Rosy-fingered, here, is also a metaphor as dawn is not a person and does not have fingers.

The caption for this illustration reads: Sitting with the sleeping dragon's head on her knee. The tale is Serbian - a king had three sons and a daughter, whom he overly protected. One day he allows his daughters to go with his sons and a dragon comes and takes her and guards her, with its head on her lap as seen here. The youngest son is the one who, in the end, kills the dragon and rescues her. The illustration is from a 1921 book on Serbian myths and legends.

Judith possibly ca. 1886 Benjamin-Constant (Jean-Joseph-Benjamin Constant) French Judith, the Old Testament heroine who saved her besieged city by beheading the general Holofernes, appears as an avenging beauty, proudly bearing her sword. Painted in glinting red and gold tones, this exotic figure attests to Benjamin-Constants esteem for the palette and subject matter of the great early-nineteenth-century artist Delacroix. Following in the older artists footsteps, Benjamin-Constant traveled to Spain and Morocco in the early 1870s, a voyage that yielded inspiration, and props, for many of his pictures. An exhibition of more than seven hundred ukiyo-e prints in Paris in 1890 inspired the expatriate Impressionist Mary Cassatt to experiment with color printing, resulting in her most formally daring and technically ambitious works.
