This photo shows ascent of the Dolmites in World War I by Italian troops. It was here that the Austrians (Central Powers) and Italians (Allies) fought terrible battles in 1915 and 1916. It is sometimes called the "White War" because of the ice and snow. Each side was trying to gain the advantage in the high Alpine mountains. Many died. The Italians did manage to attach lines and install ladders - the first iron paths (via ferrata).
