Study of a Standing Man with Headcloth and Two Studies of his Hands early to mid-19th century Wilhelm Schadow German Finely executed with a silvery graphite and gently highlighted with white chalk, this drawing presents a life study of a sacerdotal figure in a romanticized medieval headcloth. At the bottom the artist repeated an enlarged and detailed study of the figures hands. The figure on top was then squared in black chalk for enlargement. Schadow was a main exponent of the Nazarene movement in Germany, which was driven by an authentic admiration for the Italian Renaissance and its tradition of drawing. He was also the celebrated director of the Düsseldorfer Malerschule (Düsseldorf School of Painting) during the 1830s and 1840s.. The Temptation of Saint Anthony (First Series), 1888. Odilon Redon (French, 1840-1916), printed by Becquet (French), published by Edmond Deman. Ten lithographs; image: 19.8 x 14 cm (7 13/16 x 5 1/2 in.). This portfolio is one of three made by Odilon Redon inspired by avant-garde writer Gustave Flauberts novel The Temptation of Saint Anthony (1874). Captivated by the books fantastical account of moralizing tests encountered by a hermit in the desert, Redon executed charcoal drawings and attempted to evoke that mediums dense blackness in his lithographs. Based on the texts darkly imaginative tone rather than its actual content, the works in this series present invented monsters and figures in otherworldly settings with jarring tonal variations. Although Redon felt that the prints effectively translated the surreal universe of his source material, they were largely misunderstood in his own time.
