This range is a European imitation of a Chinese type that had developed in Canton in the course of the 18th century from a 17th century Southern Chinese model. These cantonese impellers, which were sought because of the particularly large number of small figures with minimized on ivory painted faces, were called a hundred faces' ranges. Unlike their Chinese examples, the characters on European imitation have not only a face but also a neck of ivory. The clothing of the warrior and the female is composed of peeled satin and mother-of-pearl pieces. The chinoiserie-like effect is emphasized by the exotic-looking environment in which these figurines are placed. Typical of fan designs, this one is replete with contrasting imagery. The elaborate sticks have a decidedly Chinese aesthetic but depict the Three Graces from Greek mythology that represent joy, charm, and beauty. This scene is placed between painted irises decorated with copper lovers. The leaf is deposited with a strip of mechanically side.
