Standing Female Nude ca. 1856 Unknown The original impulse behind these boldly ambitious figure studies may have been to aid a painter or sculptor, but they are nonetheless without parallel in the early history of photography. Enlarged to the size of drawn académies—drawings of the live model that were a standard part of art instruction in France—their scale alone sets them apart from the more modest productions of Vallou de Villeneuve, Durieu, and other artists of the 1850s. More unusually, the images are interrupted by a surface pattern that gives the impression that the photographs are printed on finely pleated silk rather than paper—likely the result of a technical error. Instead of wiping clean his glass-plate negatives and starting over as virtually all other photographers would have done, this artist recognized that the pattern created a veil that, like time or memory, removed the images from their merely utilitarian purpose and elevated them from the mundane to the realm of a

Lazio Roma Cave S. Lorenzo8. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Medieval: Architecture, painting, inscription on stone slab. S. Lorenzo was built in the 11th century, with three naves separated by roman columns. In a step leading up to the altar is placed the stone slab containing the inscription recounting the dedication of the church by Clement III (1093). Post-medieval: Painting. The church contains frescoes dating from the 14th to the 16th centuries. Antiquities: columns used as spolia German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

The Offering. Artist: Fernand Khnopff (Belgian, Grembergen 1858-1921 Brussels). Dimensions: 13 3/4 x 29 1/2 in. (34.9 x 74.9 cm). Date: 1891.A nude woman makes an offering to a portrait bust on an altar. She looks out as though the viewer's appearance has interrupted her ritual. Khnopff's Symbolism mixed an admiration for medieval and Renaissance imagery with a fascination with the occult, ritual, and the dream world. The altar here resembles one in his home, created to revere Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep. The blue cartouche at the center is inscribed with a partially effaced NEVER MORE--a quote from Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven. This soft pastel drawing is characteristic of Khnopff's muted and hazy style. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Postmortem ca. 1850 Alphonse Le Blondel French In bequeathing to later generations a record of the faces of their ancestors, an entire class that had never before been able to afford portraiture was offered some small degree of immortality by the daguerreotype. That desire to preserve the memory of loved ones found poignant expression in the practice of postmortem photography, a final visual record of the deceased with the power to preserve the image of the mind's eye. Such daguerreotypes were seen as direct impressions of the deceased, as expressed on the label affixed to the verso of this example advertising "Portraits after death, death masks." This particularly theatrical postmortem is artfully composed so as to present the dead child bathed in heavenly light, the folds of white drapery suggesting the ascension of the soul while the surrounding room and watchful father are shrouded in mournful shadow. The engraved signature, "Le Blondel Lille," confirms that the artist considered
