Three artists in a nineteenth-century interior ..

Abraham Casting Out Hagar and Ishmael, c. 1630s-1650s. Pieter de Grebber (Dutch, 1590-1663). Black and white chalks on antique laid blue paper; sheet: 43.4 x 27.8 cm (17 1/16 x 10 15/16 in.). In this drawing, the Haarlem artist Pieter de Grebber depicted the Old Testament subject of the handmaid Hagar and her son Ishmael being cast out into the wilderness by Abraham. A popular story in the Protestant Netherlands, its theme played into the societys emphasis on charity and compassion for immigrants or outcasts. De Grebber focused the scene on Abrahams dismissive gesture and Hagars tearfully wilted form, beautifully rendered with carefully shaded drapery.

Christ Disputing with the Doctors. Gesturing excitedly and hardly able to sit still, the twelve-year old Jesus disputes with the Doctors in the Temple. The wise old men listen attentively and their astonishment at such youthful wisdom is clear to read from their attitude and facial expressions. Rembrandt kept the composition light by using shadow sparsely and indicating the background with little more than a few rough contour lines.
