Zheng Huangniu and Yushanzhu early 17th century Kano Naizen Zheng Huangniu, at right, and Yushanzhu, at left, were two legendary Chinese Chan (Japanese: Zen) monks often paired in Japanese painting beginning in the early Muromachi period. Zheng Huangniu (Japanese: Seigy), whose name means “Zheng of the Yellow Ox,” is known for riding a yellow ox to which he attached various objects, such as water jars and books. As is common in later Japanese examples, here Zheng rides his ox backwards. Yushanzhu (Japanese: Ikuzanshu, “Master of Mount Yu”) is said to have gained enlightenment when he fell off his donkey while riding across a bridge. The poetic inscriptions, rendered in a crisp and brusquely brushed style, are by Takuan Sh, one of the most influential Zen monks of his day. Eleven-Headed Kannon (Jūichimen Kannon), 1200s. Japan, Kamakura period (1185-1333). Hanging scroll; color and cut gold (kirikane) on silk; overall: 106.7 x 39.7 cm (42 x 15 5/8 in.). The Eleven-Headed Kannon, a deity of mercy and compassion in the Buddhist pantheon, was introduced into Japan in the 600s. By the 700s it had gained in popularity among an increasing number of believers, a condition it enjoyed until the end of the Kamakura period. The modest size and high quality of the materials apparent in this work indicate its use as a private devotional image. An earlier restoration of this painting included the use of an entire silk backing layer rather than silk patches with a paper backing. The tension that resulted between these two layers of silk, one old and the other recent, caused serious cracking to occur in the painting's surface. Moreover, the silk backing had been dyed a dark tone which did not enhance the appearance of the painting, although it did help hide damaged area

From the 1300s through the 1500s, Zen painters in Japan frequently created monochrome ink paintings of Kannon relaxing in nature. Nearly 200 years later, a professional painter, Kano Tanyū, borrowed from this long tradition for this triptych, showing the deity in the center resting on a boulder beneath a waterfall and gazing down at the waves below. As is common with devotional triptychs, the central deity is flanked by complementary images of birds, in this case cranes with bamboo and a pine tree.

Date: 11th-12th century.This handscroll depicts hand gestures known as mudras in Sanskrit, the Indian language in which many early Esoteric Buddhist texts were written. In Japan, the gestures are called inso, the Japanese term for a Chinese word that combines the characters for "seal" and "form." In Esoteric Buddhism, mudras are physical enactments of ultimate truths revealed through the buddhas and other deities. Practitioners of Esoteric Buddhism in Japan form mudras during meditation and rituals and use them to interpret the meaning of painted and sculpted Buddhist images. This scroll was passed down in the Kyoto temple Shoren-in, a Tendai School temple traditionally administrated by imperial princes who had taken religious vows.
